43rd Tour de l'Avenir - 2.1France, August 31-September 9, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Next Stage Stage 1 - August 31: Charleroi - Charleroi, 130 kmOne-two for FDJ with Delage and MonneraisBy Jean-François Quénet in Monceau-sur-Sambre Next year the Tour de l'Avenir will be contested by national teams only – as it was in the early days in the 60's – but for now ProTour team Française des Jeux has maintained the leadership of the world's premier teams. The squad directed by the Madiot brothers has scored a significant 1-2 with Mickaël Delage and Cyrille Monnerais sharing the honours in Monceau-sur-Sambre nearby Charleroi in Belgium. FDJ's instructions stated that no move of more than three riders should go without one of them. "We've managed to do that all the way", Delage commented. "Before the Tour de l'Avenir, we've done a lot of races with the same six guys, that's why we're used to that team work. After one hour of racing, we've been up there all the time with a minimum of two riders in the front. We didn't make any mistake. At the end, I've had an excellent teammate in the person of Cyrille Monnerais. He attacked and forced the other riders to get organized, then he didn't pace for one centimetre. Before the final, I wasn't afraid of anyone because I know I'm a good sprinter. Uphill with pavés, that was ideal for me." Delage, 21, whose mother works for Château Belcier, one of the best Bordeaux wines, was a six-times French champion on the track for team pursuit. He turned pro with Française des Jeux at the beginning of 2005 and attacked from the gun in a perfect Jacky Durand style of racing at the start of his first pro race, the Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under in Australia. He is definitely an aggressive rider. He's fast as well, but he couldn't wait for getting his first pro win. "One full season plus three quarters of another one with no win, that was too much for me", he said. "Winning stage 1 is even better than any other one, he added. Now I wear the yellow jersey as well, I like it. I'm not gonna race for the overall win though, I'm not good enough as a climber and there are a lot of mountains in the Tour de l'Avenir this year." FDJ has raced perfectly for the stage win but their supposed leader Rémi Di Gregorio lost more than 12 minutes. So did last year's runner up Christophe Riblon of AG2R whose preparation has been affected by a urine infection earlier this month. His team-mate Carl Naibo, Moises Duenas from Agritubel and Dutchman Robert Gesink are the best placed climbers after stage 1. "I'm quite happy today," Gesink commented. "The course today was very difficult. There was no time to rest. I don't know what I can do overall because I'm only 20, but our Rabobank team is motivated for GC." Gesink is the first king of the mountain. This skinny rider looks pretty similar to another famous climber from Rabobank, Michael Rasmussen! How it unfoldedStage 1 of the 2006 Tour de l'Avenir started with a lap of ten kilometres to be covered 13 times by 131 riders. The course was quite difficult and allowed a few cyclists to attack early. Julien Mazet (Auber 93) was the first one to create a gap with Lars Petter Nordhaug (Norwegian national team) and Blaise Sonnery (French national team) going in between. At the first hot spot sprint (km 30), Mickaël Delage (Française des Jeux) came first ahead of his team-mate Mathieu Ladagnous. That was a first 1-2 on the finishing line for the French lottery squad. During the fourth lap, Carl Naibo (Ag2r), Robert Gesink (Rabobank) and Sergeï Kolesnikov (Omnibike) took off. Later, another group of 11 was formed with those three plus Sergio Pardilla (Viña Magna), Tom Stubbe (Chocolade Jacques), Cyrille Monnerais and Tim Gudsell (Française des Jeux), Stef Clement (Bouygues Telecom), Iñigo Lazkano (Orbea), Andreï Klyuev (Omnibike) and Lars Boom (Rabobank). Three men came across: Moises Duenas (Agritubel), Amaël Moinard (Cofidis) and Oleksander Kvachuck (Ukrainian national team). Then another three: Lloyd Mondory (Ag2r), Kurt Hovelynck (Chocolade Jacques) and Mazet. After the last hot spot sprint won by Boom ahead of Clement at km 90, Mathieu Sprick (Bouygues Telecom), Serge Pauwels (Chocolade Jacques), Victor Gomes (Viña Magna), Delage and Ladagnous also completed the front group, where attacks kept going on. Monnerais covered the moves and opened the sprint for Delage who claimed his first pro win and the first yellow jersey of his career.
