Paris-Roubaix Juniors - 1.1 (Jr)France, April 9, 20062005 Results Results Past winners The youngest is also the fastest!By Jean-François Quénet in Roubaix Raymond Kreder won the first edition of Paris-Roubaix Junior, a race that was created three years ago by the Vélo-Club de Roubaix under the name of "Pavé de Roubaix". He's a Dutchman who turned 16 only four and half months ago. He was the youngest of the 27 man group who sprinted for the win on the famous velodrome three hours before Fabian Cancellara. Among the 175 starters from 12 different countries, Etienne Pieret from the French national team was the first in action in the "Prayers road" with 11 cobblestones sections to go. A peloton of 40 riders was formed, from which Maurice Vrijmoed (DCM-Vorselaere) and Angelo Pagani (GS Bareggese) escaped. In the dirty sector of Ennevelin (7 to go), Sven Vandonsselaere (Balen BC) bridged the gap by himself. The three riders got caught with only 5 km to the finish and it was a bunch sprint at the end. Kreder proved to be the fastest. Despite being so young, he already has a lot of experience on the track. In January he was crowned Dutch champion for points score in the junior category. In a pre-season training race, he also beat out a bunch of Elite and U23 riders in a sprint. "But I didn't expect to win here", he said. "This is a shock for me." Just like Vrijmoed, Kreder is another Dutchman who joined the semi pro junior team of DCM-Vorselaere "because we don't have such good teams in Holland", he said. Raymond's elder brother Michel, the winner of the Route de l'Avenir, was one of the world's best juniors in the same organization two years ago. Vorselaere, AVIA and Balen are the three super Belgian junior teams who always beat the French ones in France. From Balen are Tom Boonen's pupils. Vandonsselaere comes from cyclo-cross – he won the Sylvester cross in Torhout-Wijnendale last December – and lacked a bit a experience on the track but he's been highly impressive when he rode behind the two leaders in the crucial part of the race, then when he came across to them, and at the end, he still managed to get himself a spot on the podium. "But this is not a win", he said, looking quite disappointed. Vrijmoed is another name to remember. He won the Étoile du Printemps in west of France two weeks ago. He was awarded the pavé of the most aggressive rider today. "I've truly hoped I'd win the race but I'm happy that one of my team-mates did it", he commented. Last year's winner Michael Baer from Switzerland came 8th and France's Tony Gallopin who is the nephew of CSC's assistant DS ran 17th after riding easily on the cobblestones. We'll see these young guys in action again in a few years with Cancellara and Co. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Jean-Francois Quenet
