47th Grand Prix de Denain - 1.1Denain, France, April 13, 20062005 Results Results Past winners Casper makes it two in a rowBy Jean-François Quénet Defending champion Jimmy Casper didn't miss his appointment with his fans at the GP Denain, a French cup race held in north of France, not far from his home of Montdidier in Picardy, also in the region of his sponsor Cofidis. He did it differently this time. Last year he won a bunch sprint ahead of Mark Renshaw. Now he only had to prove himself faster than Davitamon-Lotto's Nico Mattan, who escaped from the front group with 4km to go. Casper came across with 2km to go, just before a pavé section. The duo kept 10 seconds lead on a peloton reduced to about twenty riders, due to the strong wind. Dutchman Hans Dekkers from Agritubel won the sprint for 3rd place. Casper outsprinted Mattan 200 meters before the finishing line. "This isn't a typical sprinter's win," he commented afterwards. "I was going well at Tour of Flanders and Gent-Wevelgem but I wasn't lucky. GP Denain was supposed to be my last race before taking a break but I absolutely wanted to win something before, so I asked my staff to let me start Tro Bro Léon on Sunday as well." That means Casper wasn't totally sure of winning at home, and he'll head to Brittany for the weekend. The Tro Bro Léon is known as "the little Paris-Roubaix" because it goes onto similar dirt roads as the Hell of the North. After finishing 9th in GP Denain, Lilian Jégou retains the lead in the French cup. He increased his advantage over Chris Sutton, but not by much because the young Australian was up there again, missing the top 10 by very little. With only 6 points lead, the Française des Jeux rider is highly motivated for scoring more on Sunday in western France where he hails from.
