Dries Devenyns was surprised to be the winner of stage 4 thanks to a spectacular sprint. He looked even more shocked after the time trial. He won again! The Russians from Tinkoff Restaurants had been very impressive. They occupied the first three positions with Alexander Serov, Nikolai Troussov and Pavel Brutt when the Belgian rider crossed the line. He actually rode 16 seconds quicker than Serov and, of course, kept the lead overall.

"I came and saw the course yesterday by car and this morning on my bike," Devenyns said. "I thought it was a very difficult race but it went very well." The 22 year-old from Kluisbergen had won a time trial three weeks ago in the Two Days of Flanders but he was unsure of himself on a hilly course like this one. Being the race leader might have fascinated him. He was informed about the difference to his main competitor on GC, David Lelay, who was Bretagne-Jean Floc’h’s best time triallist on paper.

The gaps are quite important now: Lelay stands 36 seconds behind Devenyns. With three men in top 10, the Russians also have a few cards to play. There are three stages left, all of them being more difficult than what has been seen so far. Devenyns is in a good position for showing that there is a lot of talent inside the reserve team of Quick Step, but it’s going to be a very complicated task.
