40th Tour de Bretagne Cycliste - 2.2France, April 25-May 1, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - April 27: Concarneau - Hennebont, 158.3 kmHouse workBy Jean-François Quénet in Hennebont Young Russian Alexander Serov from Tinkoff Restaurant deserved to win stage 3 after spending the whole day away. It was cruel, but he got caught with 3km to go. Kristian House of Recycling.co.uk won a sprint of 11 riders comprising former leader David Lelay of Bretagne-Jean Floc'h, who took the white and green jersey back because Andreï Mizourov didn't make the final split. "We have raced as if we still had the lead anyway," Lelay commented. Philippe Dalibard, the directeur sportif of Bretagne-Jean Floc'h, had made some insinuations to the press than no-one could match them in that race. It might be true, but also difficult to handle for the riders who are now reduced to five since Noan Lelarge was forced to pull out because of a crash. In the group of 11 who jumped away from the bunch with 3km to go, five riders were already in the final break the day before: Lelay, Russell Downing (DFL-Cyclingnews), Dries Devenyns (Beveren 2000), Peter Velits (Konica-Minolta) and Pavel Brutt (Tinkoff). "Lelay realized that Mizourov was having a hard time," Downing explained. "That's why he attacked on the right hand side of the road, at almost the same time I attacked on the left." But House was already away with French U23 individual pursuit champion Fabrice Jeandesbosz (Côtes d'Armor-Maître Jacques). "When we caught the guy (Serov), I thought of attacking again but I didn't know if a group was coming across, and there was," House said. "Everyone was tired up the hill and I realized my best chance of winning was to wait for the sprint." House, 26, hails from Canterbury but he grew up in America. He has spent the last four years with the British national track team. He also rode for Belgian and German amateur clubs. A stage winner at the Sun Tour, he was the king of the mountain in Le Tour de Langkawi for eight days last year. "He's been all around the world for cycling," his directeur sportif John Herety said after being approached by a fan who asked him to sign postcards from his old days as a pro cyclist with Coop-Mercier in the early 80's. "In a race like Tour de Bretagne, which I've done three or four times before, I always think of the overall classification," House continued. "As long as you can stay in contention, something is possible. Here I believe the Bretagne-Jean Floc'h team is beatable. They have a very strong team but the way they ride is very demanding. After a few days like that, it'll become extremely hard. I've noticed the Russians are very strong as well." Serov, who won Paris-Mantes last Sunday, was today's revelation, and Brutt remains the potentially best individual rider in the Tour de Bretagne. How it unfoldedFrom the gun, four riders broke clear: Paul Brousse (VC Roubaix), Gaylord Cumont (EC St-Etienne), Bjorn Hoeben (Porcomm-Van Hemert) and Sébastien Turgot (Vendée U). They were soon reinforced by Alexander Serov (Tinkoff). The terrain was up and down all the time and it was a hard job for the chasing team. Surprisingly, it wasn't Capec pacing the bunch for race leader Andrey Mizourov but Bretagne-Jean Floc'h of runner up David Lelay. The Breton team didn't allow the five riders to get more than 2'05. As they reached the final circuit that included a long and steep hill, Serov attacked on his own. His four companions got caught but he could still believe in winning until the last climb with 3km to go. Firstly, he saw the return of Kristian House (Recycling.co.uk) and Fabrice Jeandesbosz (Côtes d'Armor-Maître Jacques). Then another small group came across with Russell Downing (DFL-Cyclingnews), Dries Devenyns (Beveren 2000), Peter Velits (Konica-Minolta), Pavel Brutt (Tinkoff) and Lelay, just to name the riders highly placed on GC. House won a sprint of 11 ahead of Gianni Meersman (Beveren 2000), who looked extremely disappointed when he crossed the line.
