42nd Tour de l'Avenir - 2.1France, September 1-10, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - September 3: Sainte-Scolasse-sur-Sarthe - Sassay, 203 kmBak gives away yellow but stays in the huntBy Jean-François Quénet in Sassay Although being flattish, stage 3 of the Tour de l'Avenir created a lot of damage. While Lars Ytting Bak (CSC) may have been forced to give the jersey away to stage winner Borut Bozic of Perutnina Ptuj, the Dane is actually one of the big beneficiaries of the day, whereas some pretenders for GC must say it's game over, despite having another 7 days to go. Liberty Seguros' flying Dutchman Koen de Kort and Crédit Agricole's Saul Raisin have lost a little more than 5 minutes, but the bill is even more severe for Tour de l'Ain winner Carl Naibo of Bretagne-Jean Floc'h, Olympic track champion Bradley Wiggins, ambitious young climber Rémi Di Gregorio of Française des Jeux or Irish rising star Philip Deignan, who are now 23 minutes down and can only target stage wins from now on. Olympic road silver medalist Sergio Paulinho was a non starter due to a muscle tear. Noosa's wonderboy Ben Johnson was one of the most active riders early in the stage, but Frenchman Maxime Médérel of Auber 93 took the king of the mountains points from him before 21 riders broke clear at km 55. This group included three men from CSC: the yellow jersey Bak, Andy Schleck and Christian Müller, together with the likes of Maxime Monfort (Landbouwkrediet), Kai Reus and William Walker (Rabobank), Mark Scanlon (Ag2r), Leonardo Duque (Jartazi), William Frischkorn (TIAA-CREF), Yannick Talabardon (Crédit Agricole) and Eric Berthou (RAGT). Müller was the first man to disappear from the group. "Then the turning point was Schleck's flat tyre," Berthou explained. "Bak was left alone. He was very impressive though, covering the moves all day. I counter attacked him with 20km to go and went away with three other riders. Unfortunately they were all fast and I suffered cramps at the end. I tried to hide that problem but I couldn't beat them in the sprint. I knew who they were..." Bozic ran 2nd behind Tyler Farrar in the massive sprint the day before. He proved to be faster than Scanlon and Walker, who also had cramps. "This is a very important win for me," said the Slovenian who won a stage and GC in Jadranska Magistrala in Croatia earlier this year. "I'm fast in the sprints and I'll try to keep the yellow jersey tomorrow, but I'm not a good time triallist and the overall classification isn't what I came here for." Bozic, 25, is in his second year with Perutnina Ptuj, after riding for Italian amateur club Sidi-De Rosa. He hails from Idria and got inspired by old Slovenian pro Walter Bonca. "He's my friend, he has done a lot of work for me and I say a big thank you to him", a very friendly Bozic said after getting his first yellow jersey from the hand of Bernard Hinault. He now has 5 seconds lead on Bak, who will be able to stay quieter now and prepare for Monday's time trial. "After that stage we'll know more about who are the hot favourites for the Tour de l'Avenir," Berthou commented. The Breton rider from RAGT is currently looking for a team for next year. He already showed in the UCI Pro Tour GP Plouay last Sunday that he isn't afraid of attacking the big guns. Monfort and Reus who have won stage races thanks to their time trial abilities in the past - the 2004 Tour of Luxembourg and the 2005 Tour of Normandy respectively - look to be in a good position but the Tour de l'Avenir remains wide open.
