New Zealand National Championships - CNNew Zealand, October 20-23, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Day Day 4 - October 23: Road Races - Elite/U23/U17 MenMcCauley makes it fourBy Alan Messenger Gordon McCauley won his fourth Senior National Road Championship at Palmerston North today, equalling the record jointly held by Nick Carter and Jack Swart. Carter (Nelson) was New Zealand's top road rider of the 1950s and Swart (Waikato) recorded his wins in the 1970s and '80s. In today's race, McCauley held off a strong challenge from Glen Mitchell with Hayden Godfrey some three hundred metres back in third place. These three were the survivors of a six man break that went away after only 40 kilometres. Of the others, Steve Stannard was dropped early then Matt Gilbert and Jarron Poad also dropped away. Hard luck story of the day belonged to Jeremy Vennell who looked strong on the first lap but his seat pillar collapsed twice, costing him any chance of getting into the break. Logan Hutchings won the under 23 Title, beating fellow Otago rider Ashley Whitehead and Aucklander Adam Coker.
