Mitchell three-peats in super-tough NZ 200km classic
Glen Mitchell made it a three-peat when he won the toughest road cycling event in New Zealand this weekend.
New Zealand's top road cyclists lined up in Whitianga for the fourth edition of K2, a 200k road cycling event around the Coromandel Peninsula. Most were taking in the scenic but savage race as a final high-level hit out before the Tour of Southland. But Mitchell was also looking for his third win in a row in the race that he has dubbed the toughest road cycling event in New Zealand.
A year ago Mitchell and two teammates, Scott Guyton and American John Lieswyn, cleared out in the opening 20k and were never seen again. Mitchell was surrounded by his team once again, including world championship bronze medallist Peter Latham and Leiswyn, who is now a permanent feature on the New Zealand scene. But the field this year was far stronger and unwilling to let Mitchell and co. slip clear.
Starting in Whitianga, K2 is a European-style classic with more than 1000 vertical metres of climbing. With a big main bunch marking Mitchell's team, the race got underway with a cautious start. With three tough climbs and several small ones in the first 40k the lead bunch was soon parred down to the serious contenders. As the race passed through Coromandel township the only surprising face up front was Olympic golden girl Sarah Ulmer footing it with the best boys New Zealand can offer.
Leaving Coromandel, however, Mitchell put his team to work when Peter Latham took a flyer over Kereta Hill. Latham recently broke through at international level with a bronze medal in the world time trial championship. Clocking close to 50k/hr along the coastline Latham had a 3min lead as he flashed through the halfway point in Thames township.
With the 200k race now half done the main bunch went to work. Latham's lead started shrinking and on the biggest climb of the race, the 14k long, 500m high Kopu-Hikuai Hill, the bunch was blown apart as a dozen riders emerged to hunt down Latham by the top.
Until now the most active rider of the day, apart from Latham, had been Glenn Mitchell who had won most of the King of the Mountain sprint primes. But over Kopu-Hikuai Mitchell was relatively inactive. The reason became clear shortly after Tairua township, when Mitchell staged his own break away.
Mitchell struck 10k past Tairua, on the steep, 250m high Pumpkin Hill. Only Jeremy Vennell could respond and the two were quickly clear. With less than 30k to go they pinned their ears back to hold off the bunch. With 10k to go the pair made a pact to work together all the way to the line, preferring to settle it in the home straight rather than risk being caught from behind while they tryied to out-fox each other with tactics.
Riding into Whitianga, Mitchell and Vennell were a startling sight, riding side by side at 50k/hr. Nothing could separate them until the final few metres when Mitchell found something extra to edge ahead by a wheel.
It was Mitchell's third consecutive win at K2, although his winning time of 5hrs 18min 22secs two and a half minutes shy of his own race record set in 2003. Not far behind Peter Latham recovered enough to win the sprint for third ahead of John Lieswyn and 19-year-old Clinton Avery in 5hrs 22min 49secs.
Not far behind the top men, only six minutes in fact, New Zealand's women's rep Meshy Holt showed everyone that Sarah Ulmer isn't the only world-class cyclist in New Zealand. A week ago Ulmer had trounced New Zealand's best women, including Holt, in the New Zealand championships. But today Holt illustrated her experience and class to take one back on the Olympic champion.
Early in the race the talk was all about Ulmer as she sat among the lead men for the first half of the race. But as the men's race blew apart on Kopu-Hikuai Hill, so did Ulmer. Stranded with a small bunch, Ulmer did well to hold the lead until just 2k from the Whitianga finish line when a large bunch came rushing through.
That bunch included Meshy Holt and while Ulmer did well to jump into their midst, Holt's fresher legs got the jump in the final few hundred metres. Holt prevailed by a scant one second, smashing her own race record by 10min to win in 5hrs 28min 47secs.
More than 1100 riders lined up for the fourth annual K2, with many of them taking on the shorter 100km Pearl Izumi K1. This also featured a high quality field, with nationally ranked riders Karl Murray and Mike Torckler winning together in a race record 2hrs 29min 37secs. Just 10min later Torckler's sister, Keri-Anne completed an amazing day for the family when she won the women's Pearl Izumi K1 in a race record 2hrs 39min 29secs. Just 10secs in front of her, their father Brohn Torckler finished second in the Veteran 45-54 age group by a whisker.
