Defending champion Tom Boonen was expected to win again in a bunch sprint at the end of stage 1 in the Tour of Picardy, but he actually got beaten by his old rival Gert Steegmans who has been overshadowed by the new Belgian hero since they both turned professional. "This is a very special day for me," Steegmans explained after getting his first pro win. "To beat Boonen is something I wasn't used to anymore. It often happened in the past, but I lost confidence in my sprinting abilities since I joined the pro ranks. Now I feel myself again."
Boonen was fourth on the line. "I'm happy with my condition after one month break but I may need a few more sprints before I'm able to win again," the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix winner commented. "Bradley McGee impressed me a lot by his lead-out for 1.5 kilometres for Bernhard Eisel, and I thought I was perfectly positioned behind Eisel but he waited, he waited...and Steegmans surprised all of us when he anticipated the sprint with 300 metres to go."

"I started from too far," Steegmans added. "But I did it when I realized that everyone was hesitating. I had an advantage of two length of a bike, I managed to stay in front during the last 100 metres but I was dead. Fortunately, I think everyone else was dead as well."
The bunch had to chase hard behind Jérémy Roy (Française des Jeux), who survived from a 155km breakaway, initiated with Stéphane Bergès (Agritubel) and Christophe Riblon (Ag2r). Roy got caught by the bunch in the last 10km of the race. "I'm very disappointed," the young Frenchman said. "The head wind and the climb near the end were too much for me." Roy isn't a full time cyclist. He's a student engineer and he missed one day of school to take part in the Tour of Picardy. Usually, he only races on weekends and school holidays.
