9th Tour of Japan - 2.2Japan, May 15-22, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - May 18: Iida Station - Shimohisakata Circuit - Matsuo Stadium, South-Shinshu, 155.3kmCardenas wins in JapanBy Miwako Sasaki in South-Shinshu After Team Barloworld tried hard to win the stages in Osaka and Nara, finally Colombian Felix Rafael Cardenas took a victory for his new team in South-Shinshu. The new stage had a 12.2 km circuit, near the Tenryu river, including a climb of 2km that was to be raced 12 times. 87 riders started from Iida train station under the clear sky. The race was active early on, as Viktor Sheztakov (Capec), James Meadley (Australian National Team), James Perry (Konica-Minolta) and Christopher Bradford (Wismilak) got away from the peloton and had 2 minutes lead at eight laps to go. The peloton was controlled by Team Barloworld, who accelerated at six laps to go. The advantage of the breakaway decreased to 1'30 at four laps to go with the chasing group now numbering 30 riders. The breakaway was caught at three laps to go, and immediately two Capec riders, Alexandr Dyachenko and Viktor Sheztakov counter-attacked from the first group. Sheztakov was still away alone at two laps to go, but Cardenas caught him and the Colombian finished first in front of two Capec riders, Kairat Baigudinov and Alexandr Dyachenko. The green leader's jersey of David McKenzie (Wismilak) finished in the main group, 15 seconds behind, and now Cardenas is the new leader. 32 year-old Cardenas is a three-time stage winner (2000, 2003 and 2004) and twice King of the Mountains (2003 and 2004) in the Vuelta a Espaņa, and also a stage winner of the Tour de France in 2001. He joined Team Barloworld this year and finished 10th in GC in the Vuelta a Aragon in April. The Colombian came to Japan as the team leader. The riders will transfer to Fuji tomorrow, where the most important stage in the Tour of Japan will be held: an 11.4 km individual hill climb time trial at Mount Fuji on Friday. Cardenas, third in the mountain TT of the 2003 Vuelta, now leads McKenzie by 14 seconds, Bazayev by 15, and Barloworld teammate David Plaza by 20 seconds. The new TT in Mount Fuji will be the most eagerly awaited stage for Japanese fans, but the organiser is afraid of the state of communications in Fuji, because they can't use a radio or a mobile phone on the mountain. How can the rider know their intermediate splits in the race? Australian Team reportBy Brian Stephens, Australian U23 Team Manager Today the Tour of Japan, stage 3, was raced in Iida for the first time. The circuit was 12 times 12 km with a very solid climb each lap. David McKenzie's lead was challenged by the strong Barloworld and Capec teams. His team was unable to control the later breaks and Dave lost his lead but only dropped to second. The winner was Felix Rafael Cardenas Ravalo from Barloworld. For the AIS Mapei Aqua Australian team, we had James Meadley in an early break which was caught with 50km remaining. Simon Clarke was able to stay with the front group of just over 20 and ran 7th in the stage, moving to 20th overall. Tomorrow we transfer before Friday's Mt Fuji mountain time trial.
