Excel Sports Boulder Stage Race - NEUSA, May 13-15, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 4 - May 15: North Boulder Park Criterium, 40/60minsLoponto & Powers take final stageBy Rob Karman
The Frasca Food and Wine North Boulder Park Criterium brought big time racing back to an historic North American venue in front of a large enthusiastic crowd of both cyclists and non-cyclists. In the Pro-1-2 Women's race it T-Mobile who started the aggression early by setting up for the first time bonus sprint and shattering the field of tired and heavy legs. A major split saw Mari Holden (T-Mobile) up the road with overall race leader Ann Trombley (ExcelSports.com) chasing solo to protect her GC lead. With only 33 seconds separating them at the start of this final stage, it looked like T-Mobile might be able to upset the home team's lead, but Trombley dug deep and got back into contact. She then proceeded to mark Holden for the rest of the race and seal up the overall win despite Holden repeated attempts to get away. Meanwhile up the road it was Catherine Powers (TDS-Schwalbe) and Brooke Ourada (T-Mobile) gaining a 1 minute advantage around the 0.68 mile loop before sprinting for the stage win in front of an enthusiastic crowd. The win went to Powers with T-Mobile's Lara Kroepsch taking the field sprint for 3rd. The men's race proved to be just as exciting as many local riders sought glory on the hallowed ground on Boulder bike racing. Most aggressive of the day were Dan Schmatz (SeaSilver) who wanted redemption after flatting out of the break he helped initiate the day before and his team mate Peter Loponto. One of these two seemed to be in every attack until one finally stuck containing Schmatz, Christian McCarthy (Vitamin Cottage), Ian McGreggor (TIAA-CREF), and Kelly Ruddick (Pro Peloton). The pack seemed content to let them go as the Vitamin cottage team of race leader Andy Bajadali set tempo on the front with a team mate up the road. With less than 10 laps remaining though the speed picked up and with the pack closing in McGreggor launched himself out of the break with 6 to go in a bid for solo glory. It was not to be though as the rst of the break was absorbed with two to go and McGreggor was brought back into the fold on the bell lap. In the end it was Schmatz leading out Loponto for the SeaSilver 1-2 punch with Andy Bajadali rolling in safely with the pack to claim the final overall victory.
