Boonen strong as Sosenka wins stage

Stage 3b, run between Buggenhout and Londerzeel turned out to be a rather big surprise. Boonen's lead over time trial specialist Bert Roesems (Davitamon-Lotto) was 24 seconds before the stage, and it seemed that Boonen would probably be able to defend his black leader's jersey if he did a good job. Few expected Boonen to ride an exceptional time trial, beating Roesems with a few tenths of a second and keeping the jersey without losing a single second to his main rival.
One rider that neither Roesems or Boonen could match was Czech road champion Ondrej Sosenka (Acqua e Sapone) who rode a magnificent time trial early in the stage and produced a time that stood up against that of Boonen and Roesems by seven seconds.
The first time of the day that stood out was that of Bodysol's Dominique Cornu, whose 19.03 over the 15 kilometre course lasted until Sosenka took the better out of him, producing a time of 18.42. It was expected that the real action wouldn't take place until the top fifteen riders were coming in to Londerzeel, but as Sosenka's time lasted even through Agritubel's Linas Balciunas' 18'58 ride, it became clear that only Roesems or Boonen could threaten him. Roesems looked as aerodynamic as ever, but failed to punish Sosenka's time. Boonen, on the other hand, started out the stage very hard, looking strong with a fast cadence and a stiff upper body. However, after the halfway mark, it looked like Boonen might have overdone it a bit, and his cadence dropped and his head started to slowly wag from side to side as he approached the line.
Chocolade Jacques rider Nico Eeckhout started out the stage only eight seconds behind Boonen, but turned out to be a rabbit for Boonen to chase as the race leader quickly got Eeckhout in sight. That might have been the decisive element for Boonen, who performed an impressive ride for the last half of the race, and collected his second second place of the day. Tom Boonen starts tomorrow's 232 kilometre stage from Londerzeel to Visé with a 24 second advantage over Bert Roesems.
