90th Milano-Torino - 1.HCItaly, March 5, 20052004 Results Results Past winners Sacchi wins Milan-TurinFassa Bortolo's Fabio Sacchi, normally a hard working member of Alessandro Petacchi's leadout train, has won the 90th edition of Milan-Turin. In a small group sprint, Sacchi beat two-time winner Mirko Celestino (Domina Vacanze) with Paolo Tiralongo (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare) finishing third. "This was good for the morale," said Sacchi after his 14th career victory. "I knew I was going strong, but winning is always nice. The fast men in this team are often called upon to work for our sprinter Petacchi. We do it very willingly, in view of the results and his kind attitude towards us. However, every so often it is nice to put oneself in front of everyone. For once, I can thank my fantastic teammates for what they did. "This morning our director Giannelli decided that myself, Nibali and Petito should race properly and if we were together in the finale, to help me in the sprint. It went like this: on the last climb we had nine in front; myself, Nibali and Petito were all there. In the final kilometres, my teammates helped me and in the end I succeeded in taking home this big race." The race, which has been moved from its traditional October date to March, started with 153 riders at 11:40am in Novate Milanese. Daniel Schnider (Phonak) was the only non starter. The first two hours were raced at a moderately brisk 41.25 km/h, with plenty of attacks but none successful. After 108 km, Radoslav Rogina attacked and took 18 others with him. The group managed a 40 second lead but was caught by the bunch at km 116. Four kilometres later, another large group of 24 split off the front, but after reaching a lead of 23 seconds, it came back together after 128 km. The average after three hours was 41.8 km/h. A more successful move came from Kristjan Fajt (Tenax), who attacked after 142 km and quickly gained a lead of over a minute. After 150 km, Ignacio Gutierrez (Phonak) countered and caught Fajt in only two kilometres. The Slovenian quickly went back to the bunch, and Gutierrez suffered the same fate shortly afterwards. The next riders to go clear were Matthew White (Cofidis) and Luis Felipe Laverde (Panaria) at km 158. These two managed a maximum lead of 46 seconds with 30 km to go, but on the Colle di Superga, the pair were recaptured. With 17 km left, the winning breakaway went: Emanuele Sella, Lucca Mazzanti, Paolo Tiralongo (all Panaria), Mirko Celestino (Domina Vacanze), Fabio Sacchi, Roberto Petito, Vincenzo Nibali (all Fassa Bortolo), Danilo Di Luca and Andrea Noč (Liquigas-Bianchi), with Przemslaw Niemec (Miche) managing to get across 2 km later. Ivan Basso (CSC) and Serguei Gonchar (Domina Vacanze) were chasing at 14 seconds, but didn't make it across. Celestino attacked on the descent with 5 km to go, gaining half a minute before he was caught by the group behind with 2 km to go. Nevertheless, he had the strength to finish second behind Fabio Sacchi in the sprint, with Tiralongo placing third.
