Three man break succeeds

By Skeeler News Service

Festival of Speed continued the following day outside the city of Orlando on a wide open space adjacent to Orlando International. The weather was warmer and the wind was blowing. With an exception of a few marked potholes, the route was smooth, flat like a pancake, and great for a crit. All categories, including the Pro-1-2-3 women, faced heavy winds. And while Jen Green raced again to the first place, the podiums around here changed dramatically. This time it was Cindy Thomkins who followed Green across the finish line while Patty Slovac was 3rd.

It was a deja vu in the men's pro-1-2. The wind was still blowing strongly and the pack stayed pretty much together. Then suddenly, the wind was gone and a breakaway developed. The 100 rider strong peloton trying to reel in the break lost two to three riders at each lap. The break had young Frankie Travieso, Yosvani Falcon, with John Durango of JCInvestors Cycling Team and Jeff Hopkins (Jittery Joe's) in his wake. They worked together keep the tempo up, each one taking turn breaking wind. They were too fast for the main pack. The average speed was about 48 km/h but Hopkins was suffering. With only three laps left, Hopkins fell back to a six rider group trying to bridge the 1'30 gap. Either the peloton slowed ,down or the Travieso trio went faster, but with only 1 lap to go they trailed the peloton by 41 seconds. With Hopkins out of the way the sprint was between Travieso and Durango, with Travieso's teammate Falcon for the 3rd place, it was Travieso's wheel crossing the finish line first.
