Stage 3 - June 17: Truckee/Tahoe Road Race, 108 miles

Moninger takes second win

Light snow, winds and cold temperatures greeted racers in Truckee, CA for the first Truckee/Tahoe Road Race addition of the 13th Tour de Nez. The 108-mile course, consisting of three 36-mile laps, with steep climbs and strong head winds challenged even the most seasoned racers. Omnium Points leader, Scott Moninger of Health Net/Maxxis motored in with time for a cup of coffee before Andy Bajadali of Vitamin Cottage nipped Anthony Colby of Target Training at the line for second.

The race stayed together throughout the first circuit until the first time up the 7129 ft summit of Brockway summit before Glen Mitchell, Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada, Aaron Olson, Colavita/Sutter Home, Jason Bausch, Seasilver and Tim Larkin, Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada Cycling taking the lead and developing an increasing gap between the rest of the pack. Almost a third of the way up the hill climb Glen Mitchell fell off the group and the remaining riders had a 2:37 lead on the field.

As the chase came over the hill, birthday boy, Karl "Ten" Menzies of Advantage Benefit/ Endeavour launched his attack over the top and by the bottom of the hill. Menzies had put 1:10 into the main bunch, reaching speeds of 104km/h and was now chasing the leaders with two others in tow. The race continued and by the second climb up Brockway summit, Bausch fell back and Olson began driving the pace up. The remaining leaders for the second lap around were Olson and Larkin, with Menzies chasing the lead group. During the second climb two other chase groups had formed. Race favourite Scott Moninger of Health Net/Maxxis and Alex Candelario of Jelly Belly/Pool Gel were among the riders. As the field descended, they were 5:20 behind the lead group. About 65 miles into the race, Olson and Larkin were leading with Menzies coming in between them.

By the final lap, the two chase groups had merged and formed a group of ten, with Scott Moninger and Andy Bajadali of Vitamin Cottage among them. The group then caught up with Menzies and formed a group of 15, which included Moninger, Bajadali and Anthony Colby of Target Training. The rest of the field was scattered back.

In the last legs of the race James Mattis of Webcor Builder launched an attack that was not going be answered by anyone and quickly built up a :46 lead over the top of the small climb. Moninger, Bajadali and Colby then attacked and caught Mattis. The rest of the break was splitting into groups of five to six. After Mattis was absorbed, he was on his way out the back as Moninger drove the pace up the climb for the final lap. Moninger, Bajadali and Colby quickly built up a lead and left Mattis between the two groups over the summit of the hill climb. Moninger then broke away from the group at the 1K to KOM mark and by the top he had gained 38 seconds. Menzies had attacked the lead group on the descent and caught Mattis, driving away to the finish. What was left of a discernible group was led home by Zach Walker of McGuire Langdale.
