Tour de Nez - NE/NRCNevada, USA, June 16-18, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - June 16: Downtown Truckee criterium, 60 minutesMoninger takes evening stageBlustery wind and light rain greeted a huge field as they came to the line in historic downtown Truckee, CA for 13th Annual Tour de Nez Historic Downtown Truckee Criterium. Immediately after the gun started the race the attacks came fast and furious with Aaron Olsen animating the early action of the race. A very attentive field refused to let a gap grow over five seconds until a third of the way into hour-long race the first move with real legs began dictating to the peloton. A group of five including Aaron Olson (Colavita/Sutter Home), Andy Bajadali (Vitamin Cottage), Scott Moninger (Health Net/Maxxis) and Dan Schmatz (Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada), and Zack Walker (McGuire/Langdale) made a very strong selection at the midway point of the race. As the field began the process of reeling in the breakaway, Moninger attacked hard out of the break and continued to stoke the coals building his lead lap after lap. Alex Candelario (Jelly Belly/Pool Gel) was the last rider able to bridge up to the now shattered chase group pursuing solo leader Scott Moninger holding onto a 19 second gap. As the Tour de Nez got down to the business end of the race Moninger continued to roll at an incredible high steady stay and with 15 minutes of racing remaining looked to be closing in on lapping the field being controlled by his Health Net/Maxxis teammates. As the Moninger move started to look like it was going to stick the chase began setting itself up for maximum omnimun points. With three laps to go Health Net/Maxxis escorted Moninger up to the front of the group he had just lapped, securing his victory. With second place still up for grabs it was like the Donner Party with two to go. A very aggressive Candelario went ballistic on the final lap and shattered the group. With a 10 bike length lead Candelario posted a strong second place finish with Aaron Olson rolling through moments later to round out the Tour de Nez. After an incredible day of racing Scott Moninger will start tomorrow's stage wearing the leader's jersey as he starts a 108-mile road race. The race then continues with the Mighty Tour de Nez Criterium in downtown Reno on June 18th.
