Swedish Championships - CNHuskvarna/Värnamo, Sweden, June 16-19, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 4 - June 19: Värnamo Road Races - Women Junior and Men Elite, 50/180 kmLjungblad earns the yellow and blueBy Gabriella Ekström Amore & Vita rider Jonas Ljungblad can call himself Swedish Champion after having outsprinted his four breakaway companions in Värnamo. Ljungblad has had a good season until this date, winning Tour de Vendée in May. The race for the yellow and blue jersey was contested over twenty laps of nine kilometres, with one 350 metre climb in it. It was the sort of climb that feels easy enough on training, but that gets to you as you pass over it time after time. The race was fast from the start, and a lot of riders were eager to get in a break, especially since some of Sweden's best professional riders were absent from the race. They were busy with their racing schedules in Europe, and couldn't come to the Swedish Championships that is ridden one week before the official championship weekend in Europe. Lots of attacks went away in the first eight laps, and the most active teams were Team Mälarenergi, CykelCity and Borås CK. No break managed to get a decent gap until John Nilsson (Auber 93), Johan Lindgren (CykelCity) and Mattias Carlsson (Borås CK) got away after 75 kilometres. They got a gap of forty seconds to the peloton that was being controlled by Team Mälarenergi and Åstorps CK. Unfortunately for the break, Mattias Carlsson suffered a mechanical problem and the remaining two riders were brought back shortly afterwards. After that, with seven laps to go, Lukas Persson (Team Mälarenergi) was allowed some freedom with Johan Lindgren who made a second attempt to get away. They got fifty seconds, but the pro's started riding on the following lap. A thirteen man break was created, and on the fifteenth lap, five riders broke away from them. They were John Nilsson, Jonas Ljungblad, Stefan Adamsson (Barloworld), Fredrik Johansson (Konica Minolta) and Christoffer Stevenson (Team Mälarenergi.) After that, it was clear that the best riders were already in the front, and no one was able to bridge up to them. The five riders in the group managed to co-operate very well together, and they didn't start to attack each other until they had passed the climb for the last time, and only six kilometres remained. Ljungblad, Adamsson and Stevensson all thought they'd benefit from a sprint, and were content with the development. The last six kilometres were filled with attacks, but no one was allowed the slightest gap, until Ljungblad and Adamsson started to look at each other with three k's to go. The other three rode clear, and Ljungblad proved that he was most keen on the sprint when he finally closed the gap. The last part of the course was a tricky one, with a ninety degree right turn three hundred metres before the line, followed by another ninety degree right turn, two hundred metres before the line. Stevensson was the first rider to enter the cluster, and he was followed by Ljungblad and Adamsson. Ljungblad managed to come around Stevensson in the final metres, and won by half a wheel. "The sprint was so short, so I thought I better start the sprint straight away," Ljungblad said after the line. "It's just too bad that all Swedish pro's aren't here, because I would have loved beating them all."
