46th Fitchburg-Longsjo Classic - NEUSA, June 30-July 3, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - July 2: Unitil Road Race at Wachusett Mountain, 69 milesSnow Valley-Seal On steps up to the topKodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada keeps leadBy Mark Zalewski On the Snow Valley-Seal On team web site, Peter Baker says that one of his goals for 2005 is an NRC win -- a tall order for a first-year professional on a first-year pro team. But today in Fitchburg, atop the Wachusett Mountain, the former collegiate national champion crossed an item off his to-do list. Riding along in a break that contained an in-fight between two bigger teams, Baker capitalized on a gap with less than two laps and a final summit climb to go. "I got to the final climb and my legs started cramping," said Baker. "Next thing I know they are giving me rapid splits with Dominique Perras (Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada) coming hard. I looked back and saw he was starting to weave and I just dug in to the line." With this win, Snow Valley-Seal On finally breaks through to the top spot, coming close the day before with a second place by Russ Langley. However, Baker was quick to point out that the team is just going to keep charging ahead, both in tomorrow's criterium finale and into the rest of the NRC season. "We had a strong race yesterday with Russ getting second but we're not going to be complacent." In the overall competition, Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada and Colavita/Sutter Home continued their battle for the lead. The Colavita/Sutter Home boys seemed to be holding the cards in today's stage with four riders in the break to Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada's two. "Colavita must have figured they had it in the bag -- they had four against two in the end," said team director Robin Zellner. "The kid in the break made a pretty savvy move. The one guy was able to hold on -- and it was smart for him to do it." With Baker already up the road, the remainder of the break was left to sort things out. "They got to the final climb and our guys attacked and cracked the rest of the break," explained Zellner. "Perras attacked early and came within five second of beating [Baker.] Larkin ended up third." With his effort, Dominique Perras takes over the lead from teammate Ben Jaques-Maynes, but not without a full effort from the race leader. "Ben got to the base down 1:30 and launched an attack that almost retained his lead!" said Zellner. With only a criterium ahead, and two of the three podium spots occupied, Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada it sitting pretty. And it is safe to say that this race is a real turning point for the team this season. "Hopefuly we'll take this and run -- we've got some races to win now," said a happy and relieved Zellner. "I pulled the plug on Cascade so we're gonna hit Superweek pretty hard and then do Altoona. Palmer-Komar maintains lead with stage winThe surest way to keep a lead is to win every stage of the race. Even though Sue Palmer-Komar (Colavita/Cooking Light) has not won all the stages of the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic, two out of three is still good. The race leader stamped her authority of the race by taking the toughest stage with a solo attack to the top. Like yesterday, the field rode a steady tempo until late in the race. Through the feed zone for the final time the pack was together, but once they reached the final ascent up the Wachusett Mountain it was game on. Dotsie Cowden (Colavita/Cooking Light) launched the first attack, which was covered by Tina Pic (Quark). Then Palmer-Komar took a shot and shattered the field. She held her gap the rest of the way to take the stage. Taking fourth place was Rebecca Much (T-Mobile) who is riding the race by herself. While not having any of her dominating teammates with her, she says that not having the pressure of working at the front all day is a nice change of pace. While it was hard to match Palmer-Komar's attack, the young climber was looking for a little more mountain to close the distance. "Too bad it wasn't a little longer!," Much told Cyclingnews after the stage.
