Day 6 - July 2: Criteriums

Men's crits close out championships

Seven national championship titles were on the line today as a thrilling day of criteriums brought the 2005 Park City Cycling Festival to a close. The remaining fields of master men put on quite a show for the crowd with very aggressive riding.

Kicking off the final day of racing were the men 60-64. Lawrence Bosch (Boulder Masters) was the strongest rider in the field, laying claim on a coveted stars and stripes jersey. Current National road race champion John Haney (unattached) earned the right to stand on the podium again this week - this time with the silver medal around his neck. Michael Gulpin (Gallatin Valley Bicycle Club) claimed the bronze while Hardin Davis (Utah Premier) and James Fox (Team Hammer Gel) were fourth and fifth respectively.

In the men's 55-59 battle, a select group of five riders worked together at the front of the race. After 40 laps on the 1 kilometer course, the five remained together for a sprint finish despite strong efforts from their chasers. Winning the race to the finish line was Bernard Sanders (El Toreo/Brbc), Barry Messmer (Aca/Gs Boulder Masters) finished just behind him in second while David Hixson (Gran Fondo Cycling) earned the bronze. Paul Mack (Boulder Masters Cycling Team) and Ken Louder (Sobieski & Bradley/Sportsbase) rounded out the podium.

The men 50-54 provided arguably the most exciting race of the day. A very talented field of 27 lined up for 30 laps on the brutal course, and gaps began to form as early as six laps into the contest. The legendary Wayne Stetina (U.S. Postal Masters), David Leduc (Mercy Cycling Team), and Mark Caldwell (Team Spine) set a difficult pace at the front and formed an impressive gap on the peloton. Dirk Cowley (Sportsbaseonline.com) led the chase group that worked to reel the leaders back in. Eventually, Stetina was dropped by Caldwell and Leduc as the two leaders increased the tempo and prepared for the final lap. They went neck to neck up the final climb for the day's most exciting sprint finish won by Caldwell.

"This is how racing should go," the new national champion said after his victory. "It should be aggressive and really hard attacking all of the time."

Leduc took the silver medal and Stetina held onto the bronze medal position. Tom Bain (Geri Atrix) earned fourth while Dirk Cowley rode to the podium's final spot.

"I though I might get back with 2 laps to go," Stetina explained afterwards. "but Mark looked back over his shoulder and just punched it. There was no way. I was in my warm down mode by that point."

The men 45-49 lined up next and a talented group of four got away very early on. After lapping the field, Larry Nolan (Discovery Channel Masters Team) won the sprint finish. Brian McGuire (The Olympic Club) and Richard Vroom (unattached) earned 2nd and 3rd while Zan Treasure (unattached) and Bubba Melcher (Team Clover) rode in for 4th and 5th

The two contenders in the men's 40-44 race were determined in the contest's initial stages as Jeff Caton (Cole Sport) and Janne Hamalainen (Tulsa Wheelmen) broke off of the lead group to set a quick front pace. Rick Cimaglia (Grand Canyon Racing Team) was a lone chaser who fought endlessly to make contact, while Chris Walker (Labor Power) led the main chase group. Caton beat Hamalainen out for the sprint finish, while Cimaglia rode off with the bronze and Walker, and Hunter East (Carve) took 4th and 5th respectively.

Kenny Williams (First Rate Mortgage) teamed up with three other riders this afternoon in the men's 35-39 war on wheels and lapped the field. As the only contenders for the win, the foursome worked together until the final lap where Williams made his move and picked up the pace. It was an all-out battle to the finish line with Williams taking the well-deserved national title. Jeff Angermann (Team Spine) and teammate Michael Hernandez (Team Spine) claimed silver and bronze, while Thomas Cooke (Canyon Elite-Squadra) and Shawn Mitchell (Sobe/Cannondale) stood on the podium's final steps.

Thanks to Scottie Weiss (Hincapie Sports/Bianch), the U.S. National Road Championships closed out in style. The men's 30-34 peloton had no chance once Weiss took off to set the pace. Leaving the rest of the field very early in the competition, Weiss gained a substantial lead and eventually lapped the entire peloton all by himself. Once he had lapped every rider, there was no question who the newest national champion would be. It was only 2nd through 5th places that were raced for in the final half. All riders finished on the lead lap, and after Weiss came home to a screaming crowd, Eric Flynn (unattached) rode in right behind him for the silver while Anthony Johnson (Sportsbaseonline.com) claimed the bronze medal. Eric Pardyjak (Park City Cycling Academy) and Christopher Hull (Porcupine Grill/Contender Cycle) went on to earn 4th and 5th places.
