US Masters championships - NEDeer Valley Resort, UT, USA, June 27-July 2, 2005Main Page Results Previous Day Next Day Day 2 - June 28: Road racesWeather tests masters racersMasters racing continued today in Park City with three waves of road races that crowned eight new masters national champions. Riders didn't find mother-nature on their side, as the full day of racing saw plenty of wind, rain, and hail thrown at them. Getting off to an early start this morning for their 78 mile contest were the men ages 30-34. The women 30-34 and 35-39 toed the line next for a combined start and took off for a total of 54.2 miles. Maatje Benassi (Excel Sports) successfully defended her road race title in the women's 35-39 group in what she called a relaxed race. "From the get-go, it seemed like we would stay together," she explained after her win. Benassi, who won silver in yesterday's time trial, got away with a group of about 5 coming up the climb that leads back into Deer Valley. She made her decisive move with an attack on the roundabout just before the home stretch. "I wasn't satisfied with the silver yesterday," an excited Benassi said. Also earning a stars and stripes jersey in women's racing was Gwen Erffmeyer (JR Engineering) who outsprinted her competitors in the 30-34 age group and laid claim on a well-deserved gold medal. All three categories of racers made it back to the start/finish at about the same time, with the men almost catching the women. Michael Olheiser (Memphis Motorwerks) was the man of the hour as he sprinted in ahead of silver medalist Daniel Vinson (SC Velo/Michelob Ultra) to take the men's 30-34 title. The two top finishers were followed about 30 seconds later by the rest of the field. As the first set of races concluded, riders warmed up and prepared for the next wave which included the men 35-39, women 40-44, and women 45-49. After 2 hours and 38 minutes racing the 54.2 miles in testing weather conditions, the crowd saw one rider coming in all alone. Despite two determined chasers, Cynthia Mommsen (The Olympic Club) was able to hold on to her lead all the way to the finish and become the day's fourth national champion in the women's 40-44 group. The rest of the field rolled across the line fairly spread out. In the women's 45-49 category, yesterday's time trial national champion Carla Flores (Southern Mortgage Racing) broke away from the bunch and rode her way into the start/finish with a commanding lead to claim her second national title in as many days. A very talented men's 35-39 field battled it out over 78 miles this afternoon, and in the end - two men were able to get away for an exciting sprint finish. Kenny Williams (First Rate Mortgage) proved himself a worthy national champion as he sprinted over the line not even a bike's length ahead of 2nd place finisher Jeff Angermann (Rocknasium/CBE). The unpleasant weather had let up for a bit, but just as the final two groups were rolling out, more thunder storms began rolling in. The men's 50-54 and 55-59 groups rode out for their 54.2 miles in the trying conditions. Several attacks were made in the 50-54 race only to be reeled back in until David Zimbelman (Excel Sports) broke away from the group in the final miles and gained a 7 second lead. Zimbelman was able to hold on for the win despite strong efforts from his chasers. In the 55-59 race, the group rode together almost the entire time. As they neared the roundabout that would bring them back into Deer Valley, a group of three broke away. Kenny Fuller (Simple Green/Cycles Veloce), David Hixson (Gran Fondo Cycling), and Paul Mack (Boulder Masters Cycling Team) were then the three contenders for the victory. As they rounded the final corner, Hixson and Mack dropped Fuller and went to war in the final sprint. Hixson out-sprinted his rival and rode away with the day's final stars and stripes jersey.
