US Elite Championships - CNPark City, UT, USA, June 21-27, 2005Main Page Results Previous Race Next Race Race 2 - June 21: Elite Men TT, 34kmBaldwin earns the stars & stripes backBy Kristy Scrymgeour For the second time in three years, Chris Baldwin (Navigators) holds the stars and stripes jersey after taking out the Elite US National Time Trial Championships on Antelope Island, Utah today. Baldwin, known for his time trial ability, won the event in 2003, but had a disappointing race last year. Today, he made up for that and came home on the same course to finish 16 second on his teammate Jeff Louder over the 34km event. Baldwin has had success in quite a few time trials this year, placing a very strong third place behind Floyd Landis and Dave Zabriskie in the Tour de Georgia time trial, winning the time trial and the overall at the Tour of Boulder and coming directly off a win in the prologue at Nature's Valley. "He so talented in the time trial," said his teammate Louder after the race. "He's an aerodynamic model. You can see him coming for miles and he just looks so fast." Baldwin was excited with the win when Cyclingnews caught up with him after the race but the first thing he said was that he was disappointed for his wife Kimberly who had to pull out of the race after only a few minutes due to a mechanical. "I'm just glad she didn't crash though," he said. "The screws in her TT bars were totally loose." Baldwin said he tried not to think about this time trial in the weeks leading up to it, although it was evident that the win was very important to him. "It's been in the back of my head," he said, "but I tried not to get too focused on it this year so I just raced at Nature's Valley for preparation. Max had me do some TT stuff last week and Kimberly has been motor pacing me." He added that he felt great right from the gun. "It was a good day and I knew right away that I was on a good day. I'm really lucky with the weather too as it didn't get too hot out there. I wanted to get as close to [Chris] Wherry as possible. He started in front of me and I knew he'd have a strong ride." Baldwin can relax now as the pressure is off. He said he'd be staying around to support Kimberly in her road race tomorrow. "I'll probably be out there in my Devil's outfit," he laughed. Next up for Navigators is Cascade Classic, followed by the Tour of Quinghai Lake in China. Baldwin's teammate Jeff Louder also had an amazing ride, having just come off a third place in the Tour of Beauce, with his teammate Nathan O'Neill winning the tour overall. "I felt pretty good considering," he said. "I came from Canada yesterday and had no expectations. I didn't know what would happen but I was motivated with Salt Lake City being my home town." Louder said he could see Baldwin going the other way as he was on his way back, which helped his ride. "Watching him go so fast made me remember I had to dig in," he said. "I'm happy for second," he added. "It sucks to be first loser, but I'm happy for Chris. It's his specialty and he's so talented at time trials. It's also great to see Navigators take one-two. Coming off Beauce where we won with Nathan, it's really great to see the team mesh. We'll be motivated now for the rest of the season. Taking the final podium spot in the men's event was Bernard Van Ulden (Webcor Builders).
