International Tour de Toona - NEUSA, July 25-31, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - July 28: Hollidaysburg Circuit Race, 96.6kmColavita-Sutter Home comes back swinging in 'ToonaHaedo and Page sprint to top two places -- Wherry keeps overallBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Hollidaysburg, PA After losing time in the overall during yesterday's stage from Johnstown to Altoona, Colvita-Sutter Home had plenty of work to do -- and they got right to it. Davide Frattini and Aaron Olsen escaped with Ben Jacques-Maynes (Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada),Snow Valley-SealOn's Matthew Crane and Jittery Joe's-Kalahari's Tim Johnson after the first KOM climb, with Jacques-Maynes helping teammate Glenn Mitchell taking maximum points. The strong break lasted most of the race, until the final climb when only Olsen and Johnson remained. After catching the two, the rest of the Colavita-Sutter Home team sprang into action, lead by captain Mark McCormack. The fast run-in to the finish featured a narrow 160 degree turn at 800 meters and off-camber railroad crossing at 400 meters and a steep incline at 200 meters to the line. With the tricky finish, McCormack knew to get his sprinter Juan Jose Haedo out early. "I went with about 500 meters to go to surprise everyone a little," explained Haedo. "Mark gave me a great lead-out." To the line, it was Haedo with teammate Jonathan Page sweeping sprint leader Greg Henderson to third.
"Colavita did it right," admitted Henderson. "By the time I got to J.J. I was in total lactate. It's really steep!" Henderson said he was turning over his thirteen to get up the incline, but since Colavita jumped so early he was unable to get around Page and Haedo. Henderson and his Health Net-Maxxis team had their hands fun keeping the strong breakaway within reach, so as not to threaten overall leader Chris Wherry. "We hit panic a little bit because we were struggling to bring back the break with those strong guys," said Henderson. Luckily for the team, a few others joined the chase hoping to give their sprinters a shot at a stage win -- most notably Target Training and RMCEF. However, by the time the break was in sight, the smaller teams were out of gas and Colavita-Sutter Home took advantage. Chris Wherry keeps his race lead due to the field sprint as he trades his stars and stripes for the yellow race leader's jersey. "I'll trade this for the yellow for now -- it's a target either way," said Wherry. "We knew we needed to let a group go today, but it wasn't the best having Ben Jacques-Maynes and Tim Johnson. I wasn't panicking but we sure welcomed the help!" The long break was the first of the week, and it almost lasted. "Olsen and I were motivated," said Tim Johnson of Jittery Joe's-Kalahari. "If we had gotten over the KOM with fifteen seconds we would have made it." Unfortunately, with the catch happening so close to the finish the team could not get sprinter Jeff Hopkins in place to reduce his deficit to Henderson in the sprint competition. "I was going for the stage win and Jeff was our plan B." Nonetheless, Johnson is optimistic about the team's chances this week and for the rest of the season. "Our confidence level is high -- before the younger guys didn't know if they could do it, but they do now." Thanks to the points gained on the first KOM which launched the main break, Glen Mitchell (Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada) moves into the KOM jersey. "We went out aggressively today and we're going to stay aggressive and try to make something happen over the next couple days," Mitchell said. "There's three climbs left on Saturday with KOM points, and keeping the jersey is a goal." T-Mobile back to winning in 'ToonaKori Seehafer plays tactics to win -- Thorburn retains yellowAfter coming up short in yesterday's stage, T-Mobile knew they could not afford to miss anything today. "It just didn't work yesterday," said director Andrzej Bek. "We made mistakes and missed out." Even though they had Kimberly Baldwin just eleven seconds off the race lead, the extremely generous time bonuses offered on each stage meant that reshuffling can happen in a blink of an eye. And since the other days did not see an early break, a risky field sprint seemed inevitable. Since other teams also worried about the same problems, the attacks that came after rolling out of town made sense. With the race not even into double digit miles, a break of nine riders representing all of the major teams formed and kept rolling over the undulating course. Gaining almost three minutes on the last lap, the break was sure to survive, and one would have to make the right move at the right time. Enter T-Mobile's Kori Seehafer who crested the QOM first and descended to victory. "I came to 'Toona when I first started cycling, so I wanted to win here," said Seehafer. "Amy Moore looked strong up the final climb, so I marked her. Then Ruiter attacked and I bridged at the top. I'm a good descender so I was able to make it like seven seconds." Seehafer had been in the same situation before on this very course, but came up short in the end. "I've done this here before and got caught, so when I found myself alone I though, 's---!'" But this time the legs worked long enough to get over the finish rise, ahead of a hard charging Amy Moore (Victory Brewing.) The rest of the field came in a little more than two minutes behind, and with no threats in the break, the overall did not change much. Webcor's Christine Thorburn remains in yellow for another day, thanks to hard work by teammate Kathryn Curi in keeping the break within reach. "Kathryn was fantastic today, along with the rest of the team," said Thorburn. "The break was to our benefit -- Genvieve Jeanson loves this finish! Three minutes was the limit and our team did most of the work on the second lap." With all of the sprint points up the road, T-Mobile's Ina Teutenberg keeps her green jersey, though a few break riders like Melissa Sanborn (Subway) did move up a few spots. The QOM competition also stays with Lynn Bessette (Bianchi/GP/PCW) firmly in the lead. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Mark Zalewski
