International Tour de Toona - NEUSA, July 25-31, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - July 27: Johnstown - Altoona Road Race, 152.6kmUSPRO Champion strong in 'ToonaWherry wins out of surviving riders and takes overall leadBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Altoona, PA With his newly painted stars and stripes Giant matching his USPRO champion jersey, Chris Wherry (Health Net-Maxxis) says he feels a little bit faster, or at least he seems faster. Today in the point-to-point race from Johnstown to Altoona, Wherry and his team rode in defense of the leader's jersey, on the shoulders of Greg Henderson. But after the second of two KOMs the field was shattered and only eight riders remained, including Wherry and two teammates, Justin England and Scott Moninger. "It was a great situation for us," said Wherry. "They did extra work in the last few kilometres so I could have a rest." "We were driving it more to get time on the rest of the field," explained Moninger. "But [Wherry] looked the strongest." With the rest he took, Wherry was able to attack in the final kilometre, ensuring he would be first around the tough right hand corner into the short finish straight. With this gap, Wherry sat up to enjoy his win and became the new overall leader, taking the jersey from his roommate Greg Henderson. Hendey was not far behind in the second group on the road, showing strong legs getting over the climbs of the day. "The last five kilometres were really hard!" said Henderson. "It's so rolling - you see them just there but it's still forty seconds - you can almost reach out and touch them!" Wherry was happy to keep the jersey within the team, even though Henderson road a strong race today. "He's still high on the GC and there are so many time bonuses here. But Justin and Scott are riding well too. But hey, at least we'll keep it in room 314!" The strong riding on the second KOM in the Blue Knob State Park that broke the race apart came from Aerospace Engineering's Ryan Trebon, a tall mountain biker for Kona who finished second at the last NORBA race in Idaho. "It's always fun being the biggest dude and making the little guys hurt!" joked Trebon after the race. "I just tried to drive it over the top." For his first year on the road as a professional, Trebon is riding well and learning to adapt to ways of the peloton. "I'm not overly comfortable yet in the field, but I feel really comfortable on the climbs." Following Trebon's wheel was teammate Hugh Moran, who took maximum points on the second KOM, making him the leader in the classification. Leading in the sprints is amateur rider Brad Huff of the Mercy Cycling Team, ahead of Aussie sprinter Jeff Hopkins (Jittery Joe's-Kalahari) by just one point. "There are three teams in it," said Huff, who won the field sprint for the first line but only managed fourth in the second. "I was sleeping and got boxed in," Huff laughed. "I still managed to get one point and keep my lead though." Colavita-Sutter Home was left to chase after the second KOM having missed the final break. Unfortunately, Mark McCormack and his team ran out of kilometers coming in twenty-six seconds behind Wherry. "We came up a little short today," said McCormack. "We did what we could from the summit to the finish - we should have caught them. Trebon from Aerospace just picked up the pace. The riders at the front all had the horsepower." Thorburn Makes Most of Final SelectionT-Mobile misses out, giving up overall lead to Webcor Even though the women race over the same course as the men, departing 30 minutes later meant that the incoming rain storms would affect the race more. Nearing the first QOM climb the skies opened and driving rain drenched the field. Yet into the second QOM, most of the contenders were together on the front. Then Webcor started picking up the pace with Stefanie Graeter and U.S. champion Katheryn Curi attacking. But over the top, Canadian champion Genevieve Jeanson (The Bicycle Store) attacked, taking with her all but five of the best, including Webcor's Christine Thorburn and fellow Canadian Erinne Willock. Webcor utilised the advantage perfectly, attacking numerous times to soften the break before Thorburn jumped with 300 metres to go. "I didn't want it to come down to a field sprint with Genevieve," Thorburn said. And with the tricky finish, Thorburn knew to be on the front. "I remembered the finish and knew I had to be the first one through the corner." Thorburn came through the rough turn in front and dug deep - with the speed indicating the toughness of the day. Following Thorburn to the line was Annette Beutler (Quark) and Genevieve Jeanson (The Bicycle Store). With her time bonus for third place Jeanson moves into second place overall. Even though T-Mobile's Ina Teutenberg increased her lead in the sprint category over Gina Grain (Victory Brewing) and set the early tempo up the second QOM, only her teammate Kimberly Baldwin made the final selection over the top, but finished fourth on the day. Race leader Kristin Armstrong tried to chase on in the final 20 miles after the climb with Marina Juantre (MS2R - Honey Stinger) but fell short by more than three minutes. Thorburn takes over the yellow jersey from T-Mobile. Defending Toona winner Lynn Bessette (Bianchi/GP/PCW) finished fifth on the day and moves into the QOM lead thanks to a first and second place on the two major climbs of the day. Having raced here many times, Bessette knew exactly where the QOM sprint lines were amongst the rolling countryside. "On the second QOM the group got small fast, and without the leader jersey in the group we worked really hard - it was a good mix." As for her chances on keeping the QOM lead, Bessette is optimistic and realistic. "Genevieve Jeanson will be strong when it gets steep, and Saturday's stage is hard." Tomorrow the race travels to nearby Hollidaysburg for a 96.6km circuit race featuring plenty of rolling terrain in what should be another day's hard riding.
