International Tour de Toona - NEUSA, July 25-31, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - July 26: Johnstown Circuit Race, 108kmHenderson corners perfectly to win field sprintOverall lead changes to Health Net with time bonusBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Johnstown, PA With more than half the men's field within thirty seconds of Colavita-Sutter Home's Mark McCormack, the opening road stage of the 2005 Tour de'Toona meant that everything was up for grabs. And from the speed of today's race it was obvious that everyone wanted to win. "Everybody seemed to want to be in the break today," joked Mark McCormack (Colavita-Sutter Home.) "But it was good because we never had to really chase." After three laps and many futile break attempts, the field rolled back into town for a fast and tight finish. With two left turns inside the final 200 meters, including a hard 90 degree turn, the field began their jockey for position as far out as five kilometers. "It was a big fight from 1km to the last corner," said Greg Henderson (Health Net-Maxxis.) "The first two laps that turn was really wet -- and I was hoping it would dry up because we were going so fast. I apexed the last corner perfectly and was able to get back up speed quicker." Henderson used his 'perfect' line to dive under Jitter Joe's-Kalahari's sprinter Jeff Hopkins. "There was a big move on the inside and I had to slam on the brakes to get around the corner," said Hopkins. With the other riders slower to get back up to speed in the short finish straight, it was Henderson who easily took the win. And with the time bonus the Kiwi sprinter takes over the overall lead. Even though he is the only sprinter on the 'Toona squad, Henderson was impressed with the work the climbers did setting him up for the win. "The climbers were going bloody quick today -- it was nice to see!" Mark McCormack gives up his race lead by virtue of the time bonus on the finish line, but does not seem worried. "We could play the sit-on everything all day tactic if we had the jersey," said McCormack. "But it's still a long way to go." Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada's Glen Mitchell did not bother to wait for the finish line to make his move, attacking on the first KOM climb just 13 miles into the race. Mitchell was able to follow a lead-out by teammate Dominique Perras. A second place on the next lap insured his place for the day. "The KOM jersey was there for the taking today, but there's still five more days of hard racing," said Mitchell. "I feel pretty good so I'll try to keep gaining points, but the goal for Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada is to win the bike race." Teutenberg scorches fried women's fieldHigh temperatures limit attacking but not sprintingUnlike the overcast morning for the men's race, the women were greeted by sunshine and high humidity for their afternoon race. Even though the race started out with speed the heat and humidity worked quickly to quell any thoughts of attacking. Riding line to line for the entire day, it was T-Mobile setting the pace with race leader Kristin Armstrong on the front. The only time the field strung out was for the sprints over the start/finish, also controlled by T-Mobile with Ina Teutenberg powering to the green jersey. The final sprint was no different with the fast German coming around the final turn ahead of Tina Pic (Quark) and Gina Grain (Victory Brewing.) "Tina and I were next to each other in the second-to-last turn," explained Teutenberg. "She overtook me in the straight -- I just made it next to her by the turn and had the advantage of more momentum on the inside." Tina Pic laughed after the race, admitting that she missed the first sprint of the day due to the change of the finish line. "[The sprint] came up and I was too far back!" joked Pic. "So for the second one I tried to lead Laura Van Gilder out, and the third time I should have gone inside more." T-Mobile also retains the overall lead with Kristin Armstrong finishing seventh. "We were going fast in the beginning, and our work level didn't change but our miles per hour went down!" said Armstrong. The only jersey the T-Mobile team does not control is the queen of the mountains, due to hard riding by Dotsie Cowden and her Colavita-Cooking Light team. "The team helped with lead-outs and sweeping my wheel," explained Cowden. "We'd like to do well overall too, with Sue [Palmer-Komar] but it will be tough."
