International Cycling Classic - Superweek - NEUSA, July 8 -24, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - July 9 : J.J. Keller & Associates, Inc. Classic, Menasha, WI, 100/65kmAustralian powerhouse solos to win in MenashaKarl Menzies (Advantage Benefits/Endeavour) pulled off a thrilling and impressive solo victory tonight in the J.J. Keller & Associates, Inc. Cycling Classic (Otto Grunski Stage), Stage 2 of the 2005 International Cycling Classic. Menzies powered away from a four-man breakaway with eight miles remaining and held off a determined chase by Germany's Dennis Haueissen (Team RSH) and Colombian Jose Serpa (Colombian National Team) to claim the victory. David McCook (Jelly Belly/Pool Gel) finished fourth to claim the yellow jersey as the overall series leader. Frank Pipp (Advantage Benefits/Endeavour) initiated an early breakaway and claimed most of the available points in the Midwest Airlines Sprint Competition, thus solidifying his hold on the red jersey. The early action in the race was initiated by Frank Pipp and Jens Mouris (AXA Cycling Team) of Holland when they broke away from the field with 38 miles remaining. The two riders maintained a narrow lead until they were joined by Menzies and Alex Candelario (Jelly Belly/Pool Gel) ten miles later. Those four riders built a maximum lead of 45 seconds over the field and looked to have the race in well in hand. However, with 11 miles remaining and a diminishing lead, Pipp and Candelario dropped off the pace and Serpa launched an attack from the field. Menzies made his move and dropped the exhausted Mouris as Haueissen joined Serpa and the pair slowly gained ground on the Australian. Although suffering in the final laps, Menzies managed to stabilize his lead at ten seconds over the chasing pair and had time to savor his victory in front of his parents and an enthusiastic crowd. In the first race of the nine-day Shaklee Superweek Women's Pro Tour, Catherine Powers (La Grange) took the honors over Magen Long (OBRU/The Bicycle Store) and Sarah Caravella (T.E.A.M. Fuji). Racing continues tomorrow in Manitowoc at the First National Bank Maritime Bay Classic.
