Clarke Navigates Jelly Belly Duo Alone
Superweek begins 36th year

Sprinter and all-around criterium specialist Hilton Clarke (Navigators Insurance) lapped the field with five other riders in the open race of the International Cycling Classic, and went on to take the field sprint ahead of Dave McCook (Jelly Belly-Pool Gel) and Frank Pipp (Advantage Benefits/Endeavour) -- the latter settling for the lead in the sprint competition.
"I used the fact that Jelly Belly and Endeavour had multiple riders, so I capitalized on them doing most of the work all day," said Clarke, who is riding the first four races of the series without the help of teammates. In the final laps, Clarke knew that McCook would be lead-out by his lapped teammate Alex Candelario, and that the best place was on McCook's wheel. Frank Pipp also knew this, but could not encroach on Clarke's position. "I showed that I was staying on McCook's wheel."
McCook has been racing at Superweek since he was seventeen years old, and knows the difference between racing here compared to other NRC races. "It's abnormal when you don't lap the field in a criterium here," said McCook. "I followed the right break -- but that hill wears on you after a while." The hill McCook referred to was a steady rise over the back of the course, that when raced over sixty times becomes a much more than a mole hill.
Frank Pipp has also ridden Superweek many times, having won the sprint competition two years ago."I'm hoping to at least keep it warm for one of my teammates," Pipp replied when asked if he thinks he can retain the lead for the entire series. "It's one of the strongest fields I've seen in quite a while... I've been racing here for five years."
The field is indeed strong this year, with Advantage Benefits/Endeavour looking to perform well in their hometown of Milwaukee and two more professional teams bringing full teams to the table. Jelly Belly-Pool Gel only had three riders tonight, but will soon be at full strength with riders such as Danny Pate and Alex Candelario riding well. "We got pretty much the whole team coming," said Candelario. "It's really the best training you can do for August."
Kodak Gallery-Sierra Nevada comes to the series from a successful Fitchburg Longsjo Classic. Additionally, riders from Colombia, Mexico, Hong Kong are representing their countries here in the midwest of the United States. Combine that with the usual contingent of strong criterium riders from around the country looking to make a name and some cash for themselves over the seventeen day series, and you have a recipe for some good racing action.
