The tour concluded in the afternoon with a one-hour criterium around Petone, an historic and pretty shopping precinct. It proved fast but inconsequential to the GC. Hundreds of spectators watched the riders speed around the serpentine circuit at a fraction over a minute a lap. There were no breaks of note, and it all came down to a bunch sprint. Hayden Godfrey won, with all the leaders recording the same time.
Matthew Lloyd (Jayco) finished in the bunch and is the first Australian to win the Trust House Cycle Classic in seven years. On the winners' stage, the young rider declared the win to be "a special feeling". It was, he said, a great tour...and the UCI points were "unbelievable".
Next? He's shortly heading for Europe and a contract. Which brings to mind this race’s Aussie winner a decade ago...one Robbie McEwen.
