Wellington is a proudly windy city. The harbour-side capital is a Mecca for windsurfers; and the wind turbine which overlooks the city is reputedly the best-performing in the world, achieving 95 per cent of its potential maximum generation. In other words it blows hard here, it blows hard and it blows often.
So the fact that the final day of the Trust House Cycle Classic dawned dead-calm is noteworthy - the kind of Sunday that becomes a prime talking point in countless workplace staffrooms on Monday morning.
Overnight tour leader Matt Lloyd appeared equally calm, powering over the 12km out-and-back coastal course in the second fastest time of the morning. Sure, track pursuit specialist Peter Latham was quicker - but the distance was simply too short for Latham to make serious inroads into Lloyd's lead.
Yesterday's mover on Admiral hill, Kiwi Fraser McMaster proved that he can time trial as well as climb, retaining his second place on GC.
