The afternoon criterium was a contrast to the morning stage. Fast, tight and bumpy, with a blaze of orange traffic cones, notably demarking a 180 degree turn which saw the front riders slow to 20km/h every couple of minutes, and the back riders routinely pinging out the back from the subsequent acceleration.
No riders got away more than a few lengths in the 60 minute crit, but Latham was dominant in the race sprints, winning four, then powered to first place at the end. Not a bad hail for the day. Equally consistent in the criterium sprints, Simon Clarke (Australia-Jayco) placed second in all five race sprints.
So at end of day two, Latham heads the GC. But there's only a dozen seconds splitting the first 16 riders (four MG Xpower, three Samsung New Zealand, and two Australia - Jayco and Subway). All set for an exciting three days' racing.
