18th Trust House Classic (Tour of Wellington) - 2.2

Stage 1 - January 26: Hutt City Criterium, 45 km

Today's opening stage of the Trust House Tour of Wellington kicked off with a hiss and a roar as the riders negotiated the fast 2.5 km Hutt City circuit for an hour and three laps. Stage winner and first race leader was Subway's Hayden Godfrey who bested Australians Matthew Rex (Australia-Jayco) and Brian Appleyard (United Water/Team xstrata).
It was a bunch sprint in the end, but the action started pretty much from the word go, with seven riders away, including Aaron Rusden, who now leads the sprint competition, three time NZ road champion Gordon McCauley, and MG Xpower's Aaron Strong.
That escape was reeled in after 30 minutes of racing, but another four went away almost immediately. Then when that was sucked up by the bunch, Australian road champion Tony Mann continued the Xpower presence by going away alone for half a dozen laps and getting up to 27 seconds' lead.
With a lap to go, Mann's lead was down to just a handful of seconds, thanks in large part to the hard chasing effort of English professional Matthew Illingworth. With 60 or so riders in pursuit, it was all going to be down to the sprint. And Godfrey took it comfortably.
Tomorrow's stage sees the Trust House Cycle Classic field head over the Rimutaka range (in vehicles) to the stage start at Featherstone. From there it's an undulating stage to Masterton.
At tonight's official opening presentation, the Kaumatua (Maori elder) wished all riders "smooth sailing" and "calm waters". If today's opener is anything to go by, the race tactics at least will be anything but.
