4th Tour of Qatar - 2.1Qatar, January 31-February 4, 2005Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - February 2: Al Wakra - Al Khor Corniche, 194 kmCSC on the offensiveThe third stage of the Tour of Qatar saw a change in the GC standings as Team CSC broke open the race. With five riders in the final breakaway of seven, CSC ended up with first and second on the stage as Lars Michaelsen and Matti Breschel crossed in that order, 1'20 ahead of Marcus Ljungqvist (Liquigas-Bianchi). On the GC, it looks even better for CSC, who now occupy the first three positions with Michaelsen, Breschel and Guidi. "It was a brilliant victory today," said Michaelsen. "We really took advantage of the cross winds from the beginning. Already after 40 kilometres there were only 17 guys up front - six of which were ours. We launched an attack in two stages, and this was what made the race. When we attacked the second time, there were seven riders up front, and five were ours. I have to admit that the team time trial training we've gone through during our training camps has proven to be ideal for this kind of race. "In the end it was a given that we were to take matters into our own hands and we took turns attacking. It turned out to be me, who was able to open a gap and then Matti bridged up. For the remaining 11 kilometres we rode side by side towards the finish line. We were both pretty wrecked, but we made it. It was a very special day for us." CSC's directeur sportif Alain Gallopin was equally proud of his boys, noting that, "This manoeuvre was a lot like the one we pulled in Paris-Nice last year. To attack with almost the entire team in strong crosswinds takes a huge amount of discipline, and the riders really showed what they're made of today. The other teams got a lesson in bike racing, and it will definitely be tough for us to defend our position now. There's no doubt there are a lot of people dying for a rematch tomorrow. But what we did today, no one can take away from us, and the motivation to try and keep our overall position is very high." How it unfoldedThe 194 km (and longest) third stage started in Al Wakra on the coast, and all day the riders were buffeted by strong crosswinds. After eight kilometres, the first attack was made when 15 riders rode clear, and by km 26 the peloton was in pieces trying to regroup. Everything was back together by km 35, and it took another 20 km before the first critical move of the day was made. After 56 km, a group of 17 riders including race leader Tom Boonen and Stefano Zanini (Quick.Step), Robbie McEwen, Fred Rodriguez and Axel Merckx (Davitamon-Lotto), Marcus Ljungqvist and Magnus Bäckstedt (Liquigas), Stijn Devolder (Discovery Channel), Laurent Mangel (Ag2R), Manuel Quinziato (Saunier Duval), Maarten Tjallingii (Marco Polo) and six CSC riders (Michaelsen, Breschel, Guidi, Bak, Lombardi, Eriksen). Michaelsen won the first sprint at km 72, ahead of Tjallingii and McEwen, and by this stage the leaders had 2'10 over the peloton. The main bunch stopped chasing and was nearly half an hour behind the leaders at the end. At the second sprint (km 146), McEwen was fastest ahead of Boonen and Michaelsen, but any chances of keeping the group together until the finish were dashed when seven riders attacked with 36 km to go. In the group were five from CSC: Michaelsen, Breschel, Guidi, Lombardi and Eriksen, along with Rodriguez and Ljungqvist. The rest of the leading group could not close the gap and there could only be one outcome of the stage. With 15 km to go, Michaelsen and Breschel attacked and put 1'20 into the remaining chasers, with Michaelsen crossing the line first to win the stage and Breschel taking over the best young rider's classification.
