4th Tour of Qatar - 2.1Qatar, January 31-February 4, 2005Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - February 1: Camel Race Track - Qatar Olympic Committee, 167,5 kmBoonen belts to second winTom Boonen has won his second consecutuve stage of the Tour of Qatar, beating Fabrizio Guidi (Team CSC) and Robbie McEwen (Davitamon-Lotto) at the front of an 18-man sprint finish. Conditions were windy for the peloton's 167,5 km journey from the Camel Race Track - to the Qatar Olympic Committee headquarters, and it was the wind that made the difference on a day that saw a splintered peloton limp in behind the lead bunch. Afterwards, Boonen said, "It was a real race today. Yesterday, there was a tail wind and everyone waited until the last 20kms for the decision to be made. Today, with the wind, only the best were in the lead. The sprint was extremely tough with the best specialists in the leading group. I misjudged the finish line and started sprinting with still 250m to go. I could feel the others coming back at me. It's very satisfying to have been able to keep my speed all the way to the finish." How it unfoldedAfter just three kilometres of riding, three riders broke away from the 133-strong Tour de Qatar peloton I a break that was to shape the race. Mads Kaggestad (Credit Agricole), Maarten Tjallingii (Marco Polo) and Marco Bos (Shimano) built a lead of over three minutes by the first intermediate sprint at 22km. Bos was first across the line at Rawdat Rashed and 6km later the lead was up to 4:05 as counter-attacking rider Mohcena Rhiele (Al-Jazeera Sports Channel) was caught by a five-man chasing group of Ahmed Abduljaleel, Farkad Mohammed (both Al-Jazeera Sports Channel), Eric Baumann (Ger) T-Mobile, Kurt Hovelynck and Tom Stubbe (both Chocolade Jacques-T Interim). As the peloton formed echelons after 45km the five chasers dropped Rhiele and attempted to reel in the leaders. By the 76km mark Kaggestad, Tjallingii and Bos had 9.10 on the peloton and 2.50 on the five-man chase group. Bos took the second intermediate sprint, but by now the peloton had realised the escapes were dangerous and the chase was on in earnest. Sixteen riders, including race leader Tom Boonen (Quick Step) had rapidly closed the gap to the chasers and were just 1.30 behind the leaders. After 114km the escapees and pursuers were all together in a 21-strong lead group, with the main peloton 45 seconds behind. With just 20km to go six riders, including the previous day's runner-up, Mario Cipollini (Liquigas-Bianchi) split from the main peloton to chase the leaders but were unable to close the gap before the finish.
