Hunter grabs final stage as Voigt clinches overall

CSC secured overall victory in the 32nd Tour Méditerranéen with Jens Voigt and Frank Schleck taking the top two places overall. The five day race finished with a 122 km stage between Cabriès and Marseille, won in a bunch sprint by Phonak's Robert Hunter ahead of Gerolsteiner's Danilo Hondo and Fassa Bortolo's Fabio Sacchi.
Although CSC didn't finish 1-2-3 on GC like last year, it came close with Nicki Sorensen's fourth place behind Franco Pellizotti (Liquigas). Voigt laid the foundations of his victory on the first stage, which we won alone, then cemented it with a strong ride in Friday's Mont Faron stage. Saturday's team time trial was won by CSC, although at 16 seconds, Liquigas and Rabobank weren't completely demolished. Today's sprinters stage presented no problems for Bjarne Riis' well drilled squad to defend the yellow jersey. It looks like the next stop will be Paris-Nice.
"I'm extremely happy with this victory," said Voigt, who also expressed his gratitude to his CSC teammates. "It is a prestigious race, formerly won by great riders. It's been one of the goals for the spring season, and everything has turned out just right this week. I've already won a lot this year, but it isn't something I'll ever get tired of."
"Jens has been the big gun in this race, but the team also has a huge share in the victory," said sports director Kim Andersen. "We had big ambitions ahead of this race, but hadn't imagined we'd be able to dominate to this extent. It's been a tough week for all of us, but we're definitely on a winning streak. We've worked really hard during the first training camp, and the results are there for everyone to see now. It's early days yet with the new season, but we've had the best possible start. Ahead of us is another training camp, which will give the riders another boost - especially as they can see it pays off."
Apart from the overall victory Team CSC also won the points competition (Voigt), the young rider's competition (Schleck) and the teams competition.
