Thanks to strong support from his team, Freddy Bichot (La Française des Jeux) hung on to his slender eight-second leqad in the final stage of the Etoile de Bessèges to take his first overall victory in a significant professional stage race.
The day's 148.5 km stage from Gagnières - Bessèges was won by Jimmy Casper (Cofidis) who comfortably beat Jaan Kirsipuu (Crédit Agricole) in the bunch sprint.
The day's major action came in a lengthy escape by Bart Dockx (Davitamon), John Nillson (Auber 93), Guillaume Auger (RAGT), Christophe Oriol (AG2R) and Christophe Edaleine (Cofidis). However, once again, Bichot's team-mates organized the chase to close down any threat to their race leader and the peloton reassembled with 15km to go.
It was no procession to a bunch finish from there, though, as Cofidis went on the attack, launching first Nicolas Inaudi, then Nicolas Roche and finally Thierry Marichal off the front. None of the attempts stuck, but Casper was able to take advantage of the resultant disorganization among the sprinters' teams as they approached the finish to eclipse usually faster riders.
