Stage 3 - February 18: Vila Do Bispo Lagos, 200 km

Alexei Markov (Milaneza-Maia) has scored the first win for a Portuguese team in the Volta ao Algarve by taking the third stage in Lagos in a bunch sprint. Markov beat stage 1 winner Bernhard Eisel (Francaise Des Jeux) and Rabobank's Hans Dekkers, while overnight leader Tom Steels (Davitamon-Lotto) finished 25th and conceded his jersey to Eisel.
The third stage was the hilliest so far, with numerous Cat. 3 and one Cat. 2 climbs peppering the 200 km between Vila do Bispo and Lagos. The first climb came after 22 km, won by mountains leader Eelke van der Wal (Shimano) ahead of Alberto Padilla and Hugo Sabido. Van der Wal was also active in the first intermediate sprint at km 34, taking third behind Stuart O'Grady (Cofidis) and Candido Barbosa (L.A. Aluminios).
After Gerolsteiner's Fabian Wegmann took the points in the second climb at km 42, there were a series of attacks which resulted in Jussi Veikkanen (Francaise Des Jeux) and Luís Pinheiro (L.A. Aluminios) going clear at km 65. The pair stayed away over the Cat. 2 climb at km 77, with Pinheiro taking the maximum points ahead of Veikkanen, Sabido, Wegmann and Rubiera. Over the next 60 km, Veikkanen and Pinheiro managed to claw out a 2'30 lead, but it began to plummet with just over 50 km to go, and Veikkanen was the first to be caught.

Pedro Martins (Duja-Tavira) bridged across to Pinheiro, together with Benoît Joachim (Discovery), Julio Garca (Madeinox-A.R. Canela), Carlos Pinho (Barbot-Pascoal) and Steven Cummings (Landbouwkrediet), the group had a 40 second lead with 40 km to go. Joachim and Cummings forged ahead on their own and managed as much as 1'30 at the second sprint in Vila do Bispo with 26 km to go, Cummings winning ahead of Joachim and O'Grady.
With 15 km to go, the gap was under a minute and the two leaders were caught with 4 km remaining. Russian Alexei Markov (Milaneza-Maia) had the best legs in the sprint today, holding out Eisel and Dekkers for the stage win.
