Eisel keeps going

Austrian Bernhard Eisel (Francaise des Jeux) has continued his winning run in Portugal by taking the first stage of the Volta ao Algarve, which finished in Albufeira. Eisel, who won the last stage of the G.P. Internacional Costa Azul, beat Olaf Pollack (T-Mobile Team) and Tom Steels (Davitamon-Lotto) in a bunch sprint and took the first leader's jersey.
The 140 km stage was well controlled by the sprinters teams, who allowed Pedro Martins (Duja-Tavira) and Eelke Van der Wal (Shimano-Memory Corp) to escape at the beginning, building up a lead of 12'09 by the 50 km mark. They were chased by Vicente Fernandez (Asc-Chenco Jeans), who picked up some points in the mountains and metas volantes competitions, while Martins and Van der Wal swallowed the rest.

Fernandez was caught at km 71, while Martins and Van der Wal continued on with a four minute lead. The Dutch rider eventually went solo and was 1'20 ahead of Martins by km 103, with the peloton at 3'00. But on the final climb, Van der Wal lost most of his advantage and was caught with around 20 km to go. Francaise des Jeux proved successful in the sprint with Eisel taking his second win in a week ahead of Pollack and Steels.
