Jayco Tour of Tasmania - NEAustralia, August 17-21, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 7 - August 20: George Town criteriumMcLachlan the strongmanBy Rod Morris in George Town The day started with a criterium in George Town, won by the incomparable Rob McLachlan - his second win this week and sixth in the Tattersall's Cup series - and closed with Sulzberger's road stage win. The tour lead remain unchanged, with NSW rider Shaun Higgerson maintaining a 33 second advantage over Victorian Simon Clarke and a 1.02 minute break over Tour of Gippsland winner, Gordon McCauley of New Zealand. Barring injury or accident, Higgerson should claim overall honours when the tour finishes with a 34km criterium around the streets of Launceston. McLachlan has been the absolute star of the Tattersall's Cup series with six stage wins and snatching the lead in that championship, which will carry a healthy financial bonus, as well as an automatic start, plus air fares and accommodation to the Tour of Queensland, held in late October. The Tattersall's Cup series will finish in a fortnight when the Tour of the Murray River is raced. Today's racing in the West and East Tamar region offered plenty of exciting entertainment for fans who turned out to see 1992 Barcelona Olympian Robert McLachlan win the morning criterium after being part of a four man breakaway, which put pressure on the chasing peloton. McLachlan, South Australian mountain biker Chris Jongewaard and fellow "Croweater" Mathew Rex and Tasmanian youngster Wesley Sulzberger formed a solid group early in the 30 lap race and between them, featured in 11 intermediate sprints. At one stage the leading quartet had opened up a game of almost a minute, and even heading into the final laps maintained their tempo, eventually cruising to a 25 second advantage. McLachlan was widely tipped as the best sprinter in the lead four and proved so by outgunning Jongewaard, who had won the Sheffield Kermesse in Stage 6, with Rex taking third. Tasmanian Matthew Rice, Victorian Patrick Shaw and kiwi rider Matthew "Fatty" Gilbert formed a trio of chasers but couldn't reel in the leaders, while the bunch was led home by Matthew Goss, 36 seconds adrift of McLachlan. McLachlan - no stranger to the podium in this series - made special mention of his breakaway teammates: "It was a pleasure to be involved in a group of riders, who really wanted to work hard and give 100 per cent." he said. "Basically my team started the day trying to defend the leader's jersey, but like the day before, an opportunity to win the stage presented itself." Tour leader Higgerson rode a sensible race, watching every move of Simon Clarke, highlighted by their finish positions, Clarke, 15th and Higgerson, 16th.
