McLachlan: surprised to win?

Big Canberra rider Rob McLachlan won his fifth stage of this year's Tattersall's Cup series in the morning, when he outgunned sprint ace Peter McDonald (NSW) and Tasmanian Matthew Goss in Stage 5, a 54.9 km journey from Deloraine to Sheffield, which included the climb over the infamous Heartbreak Hill.
McLachlan leads the Tattersall's Cup series, which will reward the leading 10 riders after the final event, the Tour of the Murray River, with automatic starts, airfares and accommodation to the Tour of Queensland in late October.
His win in today's morning stage was a surprise according to the former Barcelona Olympian. "I was purely staying out the front to try and protect our team's hold on the yellow jersey," he said. "But when we came down a few of those descents, the field had scattered and I was in with a chance to win the stage.
"I hope Shaun (Higgerson) and Stuart (Shaw) don't feel too badly towards me for not staying back with them, but if you get a chance to win, you've got to take it," he said.

Peter McDonald, who will almost certainly win the Sprint Championship, when it is finalised in Launceston tomorrow, set the scene and tempo in Stage 5, winning all four sprints and the Category 1 hill climb before McLachlan caught his wheel and decided the stage was going to be his. McDonald has been one of the most impressive riders in this week's tour, even if he won't win overall honours. He is in ninth position at 3.17 minutes behind Higgerson.
Matthew Goss, who has only just returned to his home state from an extensive overseas racing campaign, is the best placed Tasmanian at fifth, but more than 2 minutes behind the tour leader. The field in the Deloraine to Sheffield stage was strung over many kilometres and it was more than 12 minutes from first to last. After riders had dissected Heartbreak Hill, they were hit with a Category 2 climb and then a more milder Category 3 climb before the descent into Sheffield.
