Taberlay tears it apart

Tasmanian mountainbike champion Sid Taberlay carried the flag for his home state in stage four of the Tattersall's Cup Jayco Tour of Tasmania, with a stunning victory. Taberlay won the Scottsdale to Lilydale stage, which included four hill climbs, and it was over that terrain that the Hobart based rider strutted his stuff. Preparing for next month's World Mountain Bike Championships in Italy and the next round of the World Cup in Scotland, Taberlay is using the Tour of Tasmania as a training campaign and snaring a stage win wasn't really in his plans.
There were four hill climbs, including three Category 3s and Taberlay showed his prowess by winning three of them and clinching second behind Peter Herzig (Qld) in the other. Those placings ensured Taberlay overtook McCauley in the King of the Mountain title and with four hill climbs remaining, including a tough Category 1 over Heartbreak Hill in today's fifth stage, that battle within the tour will be engrossing. Taberlay crossed the Stage 4 finish line six seconds ahead of Robert McLachlan and a further three seconds to Victorian Darren Lapthorne.

Higgerson controlled the leader's jersey by finishing in the top 10 (eighth),
with his main challengers, McCauley and Clarke losing valuable time. David McKenzie
crossed the line alongside Higgerson at 34 seconds behind Taberlay and he remains
fourth overall, but 1.18 minutes adrift.
Tasmanian star Matthew Goss also lost a little bit of time in Stage 4, but is
still the best placed local rider. Goss is seventh at 2.12 minutes behind.
The tour continues tomorrow with the fifth and sixth stages. Stage 5 will see the riders tackle Heartbreak Hill in the Deloraine to Sheffield race and then in the afternoon, will contest a 32 km kermesse around the streets of Sheffied. On Saturday, George Town will host a morning criterium and an afternoon George Town to Beauty Point stage before Sunday's closing criterium around the Launceston Brickfields Reserve.
