McDonald dominates on stage 3

The second day of the tour saw Peter McDonald claim victory in stage three, a 36 km criterium around the streets of Scottsdale before Taberlay produced his stunning afternoon ride. However, the overall lead in the tour remains with Sydney rider Shaun Higgerson, who holds a 12 second advantage over New Zealand's Gordon McCauley, winner of the recent Tour of Gippsland, which was the first of three legs of this year's Tattersall's Cup series.
The final leg - the Tour of the Murray River - will be held in a fortnight.
McDonald and teenage Victorian Johnny Walker - younger brother of top Australian
rider William Walker, established a break just six laps into the 30 lap race
and were never headed.
At one point, McDonald and Walker held an advantage of 19 seconds before the
peloton increased the tempo. But McDonald and Walker continued riding hard and
crossed the line - in that order - six seconds of South Australian Chris Jongewaard,
Victorian Simon Clarke and Canberra's Robert McLachlan. Tour leader Shaun Higgerson
didn't feature in the top ten in the morning stage, but there was no real damage
done to his race position.
McDonald said he was surprised by his win. "I'm not really known as a criterium rider, I'm more of a hill climber, but I'll take this win anytime," he said.

26-year-old McDonald finished in sixth place overall in the Tour of Gippsland and his bold showing today has elevated him into the top 10 in this Tour, with five stages remaining. A member of the strong Caravello racing team, McDonald is currently in sixth position in the Tattersall's Cup series and will be aiming for further improvement. Such was his domination of the criterium, McDonald won all 11 intermediate sprints on offer and elevated himself into the lead of the Sprint Championship.
"I started the whole series with the aim of finishing in the top 10 to earn a start in the Tour of Queensland, but we're only just half way and I've still got plenty of work to do," he said.
Taberlay was the star of the show in the afternoon, producing the first win
for the host state.
"I was really only after some points in the King of the Mountain Championship,
I wasn't thinking about the stage win," he said. "But when I got over the last
mountain I checked my bike computer and it showed there was only 2km to go,
so it was then a matter of having a go at it (the win)."
