Tattersall's Cup Tour of the Murray River - NEAustralia, August 31-September 4, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - September 2: Ouyen Criterium, 36 kmKersten hurting but winningBy Rod Morris in Ouyen Today's morning criterium in Ouyen was won by New South Wales track riding star, Ben Kersten in a bunch sprint. With credentials that include being twice named Australian Junior Cyclist of the Year, World Cup champion time trialist and former World Junior and Oceania championships over the kilo discipline, Ben Kersten is one of the more high profile riders in the Tour of the Murray River. However, the 23-year-old Sydneysider, is the first to admit, road racing is not his forte. "I normally only do about 200 km a week when I'm in full training, so this tour is really hurting," he said. Kersten upstaged his opponents in Stage 5, winning the 36 km Ouyen Criterium in a blisteringly fast finish, where outsprinted Mathew Rex and Canberra's Robert McLachlan. "I was ready to pull out after five laps, that's how fast they were going out the front," he said. Highlighting the tempo of the criterium around the streets of Ouyen, was the fact the race finished two minutes ahead of schedule, with the average speed listed at 45.09 km/h! New Zealand's Gordon McCauley, who won the Tour of Gippsland, the first event in the Tattersall's Cup and was third in the more recent Jayco Tour of Tasmania, took control of the Sprint Championship, wresting the lead away from Simon Clarke, who started the day holding the lead in four categories, General Classification, Sprint, King of the Mountain and Criterium. Clarke's obvious intent is GC and he did no damage this morning, finishing in the sprinting bunch. McCauley won seven of the 11 intermediate sprints and finished second in another, to move from fourth (17 points behind) to outright lead in the Sprint Championship, 3-points ahead of Clarke. McCauley, Tasmanian Wesley Sulzberger, Canberra's Stuart Shaw and Victorian Sean Finning created a small but elite group, which broke away from the peloton and at point, established a 20 second lead before the peloton realised that to win the stage, the escapees needed reeling in. Lap by lap on the 1.2 km circuit, the margin was reduced and at the sound of the bell, McCauley and Co. had been gobbled up by the chasers. It was an extremely frantic sprint to the line, with Kersten showing his renowned speed. "I only entered this tour to get some solid training, but the way I feel right now, I just want to go home, I'm hurting like hell," Kersten said. "The pace was on right from the start and I was just trying to find somewhere to hide in the bunch." Kersten is competing in his first ever multi-stage road race after forging a solid reputation as a track rider. "All I have done this year are three one-day road races and they were all handicap events," he explained. "I'm hurting badly, but I'm also determined to see the tour out the end." The day's entertainment in Ouyen coincided with its annual Vanilla Slice Triumph Festival and an appearance by former Victorian Premier, Jeff Kennett, who is now aspiring to be the next president of AFL club, Hawthorn. With many visitors to the town for either the culinary delights or the pleasures of bike racing, the weatherman also did his part, providing glorious sunshine, which was welcome relief for all concerned with the Tattersall's Cup series after enduring some not-so-good climates in the two previous tours in Gippsland and Tasmania.
