Tattersall's Cup Tour of the Murray River - NEAustralia, August 31-September 4, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - September 1: Merbein - Wentworth, 80.4 kmClarke holds strongNankervis and Irwin score on day 2By Rod Morris in Wentworth Both Tommy Nankervis and Grant Irwin are better known in Australian cycling as track riders, but today the pair of them made their mark on the Tattersall's Cup - Tour of the Murray River road race. Nankervis (22) and Irwin (21) won the third and fourth stages respectively, on a day where riders were treated to fairer weather than what prevailed at Swan Hill on the opening day. Grant Irwin made up for his bike disaster in the morning stage by taking out the afternoon's fourth stage between Merbein and Wentworth. In a bunch sprint, the Queenslander beat Ben Kersten and Mathew Rex home. Simon Clarke retained the leader's yellow jersey. There were no shortage of attempted breakaways in the afternoon stage from Merbein to Wentworth, but all were reeled in with meticulous precision by the GC leaders, mainly, Clarke, Sulzberger, Jongewaard and Co. Each time any rider with any threat of time on the leaders tried to get away up the road, orders were issued to the chasers and the task carried out promptly. A small break group did get away to an 18 second lead as they crossed the Victorian - NSW border, but as the peloton lifted the tempo into Wentworth, the margin was reduced and a huge bunch sprinted to the line. Irwin, completely forgetting his bad luck from the morning stage, outgunned former World Cup time trial champion, Ben Kersten with a desperate lunge to the line to take the victory. South Australian Mathew Rex pinched third, just ahead of the luckless David McKenzie. Simon Clarke again featured in the intermediate sprints and pushed his lead over Bernard Sulzberger out to 23 seconds. Jongewaard, who rode well to finish ninth in the Tour of Tasmania is third at 32 seconds, while there a further six riders within a minute of Clarke. The Tour of the Murray River continues tomorrow with dual stages in the Ouyen district. Ouyen will host a morning criterium - alongside the nation's famous Vanilla Slice Bakeoff - and then in the afternoon, an out and back course from Ouyen to Patchewollock to Ouyen over 86.5 km The tour will finish in Mildura on Sunday afternoon.
