Tattersall's Cup Tour of the Murray River - NEAustralia, August 31-September 4, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 10 - September 4: Mildura Kermesse, 66 kmMcKenzie takes stage, Clarke the overall winBy Rod Morris in Mildura Veteran David McKenzie won the final stage of the Tattersall's Cup series in Mildura to secure his place in the Tour of Queensland in late October. European-based rider Trent Wilson's international racing partner, Russell Van Hout from South Australia, was the big mover in the Mildura Criterium, which finished off this year's Tour of the Murray River. Whilst never being a serious possibility to pinch overall honours from Clarke, Van Hout moved from 16th at 2.22 minutes behind to 11th at 1.40 minute adrift bby the end of the stage. Van Hout, McKenzie, Tasmanian Wesley Sulzberger and Victorians Adrian Salter and Casey Munro forged a solid group, nine laps into the 30 lap race around the Mildura waterfront. The quintet worked hard and it didn't take long before a gap of 43 seconds had been established. That margin increase to 1 minute shortly after as Van Hout enjoyed time at the front of the group, picking up valuable bonus points. Van Hout won six intermediate sprints and was second in three others and as well as a big lift in GC rankings, also jumped into equal third in the Sprint Championship, which was won by Canberra's Stuart Shaw. McKenzie had been strangely quiet in the breakaway group, took his turn out the front to win the last two intermediates as the peloton closed the gap to 35 seconds at the bell lap. Wesley Sulzberger lost touch with his fellow escapees on the closing lap, leaving McKenzie to win his third Mildura stage in Tattersall's Cup history, outsprinting Van Hout and Salter and leaving Munro in fourth place, two seconds behind. "This is a really satisfying win for me," McKenzie said. "I haven't had the best of series, particularly for the standards that I set for myself and a few of the race officials have been ribbing me about not being up on the stage very often." "But I was very relaxed and not worrying about too much." "I went out on Saturday night and had a couple of beers and tried not to worry too much about things," he added. McKenzie said he will now concentrate on being prepared for next month's Herald Sun Tour, an event which he has a close affinity, after having won 11 stages over a 10 year period. The peloton was led home by Ben Kersten, 11 seconds behind McKenzie, while three other intriguing battles were also decided. Stuart Shaw entered the last stage holding a one point lead in the Sprint Championship over New Zealand's Gordon McCauley. Interestingly both riders spent most of the stage at the rear of the field, watching other like hawks and not improving their overall positions. Shaw eventually claimed sprint honours. Robert McLachlan was in an awkward position where he had to watch two riders. The former Olympian led Tommy Nankervis in the Criterium Championship by two points and had to finish within two places of the Victorian to ensure victory while also making sure Tasmanian Bernard Sulzberger didn't finish eight places better than him in the stage, or his claim on the Tattersall's Cup crown could be threatened. The latter title - and $4000 prizemoney bonus - took precedence for McLachlan, as he followed Sulzberger across the line in ninth place, while Nankervis took sixth and the Criterium Championship. McLachlan held onto win the Tattersall's Cup by just 9-points from Sulzberger. The top 10 riders in the Tattersall's Cup series have won automatic starts - plus airfares and accommodation - in the Tour of Queensland, which will be held from October 27 to November 3. Joining McLachlan and Sulzberger in the third annual Queensland event will be Simon Clarke (Vic), Gordon McCauley (NZ), Stuart Shaw (ACT), Chris Jongewaard (SA), Mathew Rex (SA), Peter McDonald (NSW), David McKenzie (Vic) and Richard Mofatt (NSW).
