McLachlan solidifies Tatt's Cup lead

The Tour of the Murray Rival opened in Swan Hill with a morning criterium over a gruelling 45 km, made harder by ferocious North-West wind, which buffeted riders from side to side. The Tattersall's Cup series' most prolific stage winner, Robert McLachlan of Canberra continued on his winning way, with another sensational performance.
McLachlan (33) won four stages of the series' opening event, the Tour of Gippsland and a further two stages of the Jayco Tour of Tasmania. Starting the Tour of the Murray River with his seventh stage win, makes a red-hot favourite to win the Tattersall Cup series, which is determined on a complex scoring system, which offers riders points to start and finish tours, as well as a sliding scale of points for the first 10 riders in each stage. McLachlan started the day leading the series and extended his advantage even further with his opening stage victory.
The Swan Hill Criterium was always going to be a tough race, given the windy conditions and the nervousness of some riders, particularly those that were trying to find a place in the bunch to hide. New Zealander Gordon McCauley, winner of the Tour of Gippsland, made several early breaks, but was reeled in each time, while the battle for points in the Sprint Championship was an entertaining affair with Victorian Simon Clarke, Adelaide's national mountain bike champion Chris Jongewaard, Tasmanian Bernard Sulzberger and New South Wales' Troy Glennan winning the bulk of the intermediate sprints.
Clarke earned sufficient bonus time to edge past stage winner McLachlan in General Classification honours. Clark took a four second lead into the afternoon's second stage, a tough 88.4 km road race from Swan Hill to Manangatang.
