Walker takes men's RR; more success for Long

From Shreveport Louisiana, Russ Walker won the Hotter 'N Hell Hundred Pro/Category 1-2 men's road race on Saturday, while Megan Long of Oklahoma City captured her second title in two days.

Walker said he's friends with Max Miley of Allen, Texas, who also was in a breakaway group of four that took off with about 25 miles remaining in the race. "I took him for his word. He said he was cramping and said, 'Give me what you can,'" Walker said in a post-race interview. "We just put our heads down and hoped for the best."

Walker, who is 38 years old, took off from the breakaway group with about five miles remaining in the race and he maintained the lead until the end of the race. Second place went to Stefan Rothe of the Mercy Cycling Team. Miley finished third. Les Akins of the Hotter 'N Hell Cycling team was fourth.

The race started off with an early breakaway of two riders - Brad Huff of the Mercy Cycling Team, who won the elite national criterium championship a week ago, and Jarred Gilker, a member of the Midwestern State University/Hotter 'N Hell Cycling Team. Gilker is a freshman at MSU. After that breakaway got caught, the group of four that stayed off until the end got away.

In the women's race, Long won her second race of the weekend after capturing the criterium crown on Friday. Long also won both the Hotter 'N Hell Road Race and Criterium last year.

"There were a couple of good attacks early in the race and the Mercy team had some good leadouts for the (intermediate sprint) hot spots," Long said.

Second place in the women's race went to Mindy Martin of St. Louis. Third place was Jennifer Purcell, a member of the Midwestern State University/Hotter 'N Hell Cycling Team.
