45th Vuelta al Pais Vasco - PTSpain, April 4-8, 2005Main Page Results Previous Stage Stage 5b - April 8: Oñati Individual Time Trial, 9.3 kmRain Proof Txapelas for Contador and Di LucaBy Martin Hardie Alberto Contador, the young star of Manolo Saiz's Liberty Seguros squad, again proved his class by blitzing the field in the final stage time trial of the Vuelta al Pais Vasco this afternoon. It was not much less than a year ago that Contador was lying in hospital, fighting for his life after a very nasty accident in the Vuelta a Asturias. He rested out the 2004 season, wondering, like many others if he would ride again, but this year he has returned with a vengeance to take so far the Setmana Catalana in March and today remaining in the GC hunt right until the final minutes of the day and picking up an impressive stage win. In the end however, Contador couldn't make all the time he would of needed to take the G.C., but really through no fault of his own. It was Danilo Di Luca (Liquigas-Bianchi) who was the recipient of the floppy txapela hat as the overall winner of the 45th 'Itzulia'. Di Luca rode a powerful daredevil time trial in the rain to put the hopes of Illes Baleares and Aitor Osa to rest. For now Osa, fighting it out on his home turf, will have to make do with just one Itzulia in his palmares. Di Luca for his part said that this is his "best ever stage race victory...one that was very hard to get...I picked up a second this morning and then I knew this afternoon would be very hard, technical and dangerous in the rain." The stage lead jumped quickly in the final stages, from Vicioso to Pereiro to Julich to Contador, but the GC was decided by just how much would separate Di Luca and Osa. And that question was not answered until Osa entered the narrow streets of Oñati, pursued by his team director, yelling encouragement and the place of the forthcoming obstacles, in a last ditch attempt to get him home in time. But before the final turn it was clear that the week belonged to Di Luca and he was now able to turn a page on his 'troubled' recent past. How it unfoldedAt the start between the post office and the old university, umbrellas or those large Basque berets, the txapelas, which I am sure are made especially big to keep the consistent Basque rain off the face, were the order of the day. The only other problem, other than the course itself, was the strong wind that was blowing with the rain. First to brave the conditions was Domina's Wladimir Belli who set sail just before 4pm for the 9.3 km technical voyage around the streets of Oñati. Other than its numerous corners, the course contained a 1 km 12% ramp that peaked 2 km from the end before the plunge with at least four corners and a few more bends below into Oñati. The riders we wanted to see were Osa and Di Luca, and the longer shots of Rebellin and Cunego at 5 and 8 seconds respectively, Rodriguez and Boogerd at 8 and 10, Perdiguero and Menchov at 17, Frigo, Contador, Rogers, Julich Etxebarria, and Moncoutié, all hanging around 20 back. The early leaderboard had at its top Credit Agricole's Andrey Kashechkin, Aranaga, Mayo and Matt White. But they were soon replaced by the likes of Arvesen, Leipheimer and Luis Perez. In the meantime, Jens Voigt was off again by himself in the rain, cresting the nasty little rise between the wet flag waving fans, before taking the one lane farm track back into town. Arvesen's time was 14:10 for the 9.3 km course but he was being overtaken at the 4.5 km check by Fassa's Vincenzo Nibali. However, Nibali wasn't able to keep it going over the tough second half. Familiar names started to head off, Garzelli, Zubeldia and Heras among them, but none yet in the hunt. The time of Arvesen, who was recently third in the time trial of the Criterium International, and 7th last year here in this event, looked like he had set the mark for those who were shortly going to fight it out. Another reference in the back of the collective CSC mind might well have been the fact that in last year's TT, Osa finished 23 seconds behind Julich. That time over only 8.5km. As things progressed, the only real early change was Garzelli squeezing Luis Perez out of the top three. At that point, there were still 30 riders to go, and as Eladio Jimenez headed off, the rain started to ease a little. As Brad McGee hit the tarmac it even seemed as if there was a patch of sun poking through the clouds. He was closely followed by his countryman Cadel Evans. The action was about to start. then Tom Danielson, who had looked good at the half way mark, put in a strong finish to come in 2 seconds behind Arvesen. Then Moncoutié was off, followed by Etxebarria. But as he left, his Liberty teammate, Angel Vicioso, who had flown through the rain, pipped Arvesen by 14 seconds to set the mark at 13'58. Behind, as Sevilla crested the climb, Julich rolled down the start ramp, followed a minute later by the rainbow striped Mick Rogers. As the rain lifted and the sun came out, the crowd also started to liven up. As Contador left the start ramp, with his recent Catalan victory behind him the tension started to noticeably increase. Julich was making his mark after 4.5 km with a time of 5'55, eight inside that of Vicioso. Phonak's Gallego, Oscar Pereiro was also doing well, with Rogers disappointing after 4.5 km being nine seconds behind Julich. Meanwhile Cadel Evans had done himself an OK time (he would say it "sucked") that was one second less than Arvesen's. The Aussie world champ Rogers was looking a bit better as he crowned the hill just fitting between the increasingly excited crowd. Pereiro came in and beat Vicioso by four seconds and punched the air. But his pleasure was shortlived with Julich flying around the last slippery bend to take the lead from him by six seconds. Rogers came in 2 seconds behind Pereiro. But Contador was not having anything of a Julich win. He powered through the slippery streets of Oñati, threw himself at the last tight left hander and sprinted to the line to beat Julich by five seconds. All of these times were of course in the grander scheme of things possibly irrelevant, depending upon the rides of Di Luca, Osa and co. As Contador arrived, Cunego settled himself on his bike...and as he did the rain started all over again. Cunego, Rebellin, Di Luca and Osa were not going to have the break in the weather that the last group of riders had enjoyed. On the course, Boogerd was splitting the times of Contador and Julich. Boogerd lay 15 seconds behind Osa on GC, whist Contador was 21 seconds behind but his time trial time of 13'43 was looking as threatening as the day's weather. Cunego's mid-point time wasn't looking great as Osa finally started. Boogerd wasn't going to upset anyone either, but at the 4.5 km mark Di Luca was a man possessed, throwing everything into it. The team car beeping its horn at him as he cut inside the times of both Julich and Contador. Rebellin was giving it heaps as well and crested to the sound of "aupa aupa" but it looked like Di Luca was going to have his way. Through 4.5 km, Di Luca led Julich by a second and Contador by two, a further one back was Rebellin. Osa was getting the big 'venga' from his team car "vamos Aitor, vamos vamos vamos venga vamooos" screamed Unzue. Rebellin was taking the final curve and looked to be set for third. Osa was getting the home crowd support as he started the 12% ramp, but it didn't look like even that would be enough. Di Luca finished fourth behind Contador, 9 seconds off the Spaniard's pace, as Osa was taking the descent, wide on what there was of the narrow, wet streets, always looking for more, but not quite finding it. Even still, Eusebio Unzue was not letting up with the voice. Into Oñati, he was yelling directions, "right...right vamos vamos...venga left!" But before the final turn, the left hander, the places were already flicking past, and we knew then that it was not going to be Aitor's day nor would he have another txapela to keep the rain off his head. There seemed something different in this year's race, it is always contested and close. But this year with the coming of the ProTour it seemed ever more so. Whether that is true or not, we probably won't ever really know, as the intensity of the moment always makes this one seem bigger than those that have faded a little in the memory. But one thing is for sure, unlike the drinking partying crowd Hemingway met 71 years ago, today's group fought out a live encounter right up until the very last bend.
