Stage 1 - April 13: Alcala de la Selva - Valderrobles, 167.7 km
Petacchi the 13th
Alessandro Petacchi (Fassa Bortolo) is back in business after a few weeks' break with a victory in the first stage of the Vuelta a Aragon. Petacchi sprinted across the line in Valderrobles to beat Allan Davis (Liberty Seguros), who has made a quick recovery from his crash in Paris-Roubaix, and Isaac Galvez (Illes Balears) in a bunch sprint at the end of the 167 km stage.
"I am returning after a month of 'rest' and to win straight away certainly gives me a lot of morale," said the Italian after his 13th win of the season. "My teammates rode and caught the two breakaways and led me out to perfection: Bruseghin pulled for a long time and then Sacchi, Tosatto, and Velo until the final 200 metres. The finish was slightly uphill and I undoubtedly worked hard, but considering that I've not raced for nearly a month, I can be satisfied.
"In this Spanish stage race, the stages aren't too long and this will facilitate my preparation. There are at least two other finishes suited to me. I won't be putting on the brakes in those."
How it unfolded
The first stage was between Alcala de la Selva and Valderrobles and was held over a fairly flat course, with just two Cat. 3 climbs. Dutchman Bram Schmitz (T-Mobile) and Stéphane Auge (Cofidis) escaped after 15 km and managed to gain seven minutes after 38 km. But the cooperation was broken after Auge had to change his bike three times, and Schmitz carried on alone, a minute behind Schmitz. Schmitz extended his advantage to 8'20 on the Puerto la Aldeula (km 54), and maintained his lead over the Cat. 3 Puerto Majalinos (km 64), as Fassa Bortolo assumed control of the peloton.
With more than 100 km to go, Fassa could afford to chase at a steady pace, and even though Schmitz and Auge got together again, they were caught by the silver train with 11 km to go. There were several attacks in the last 10 km, with various teams trying to break the Fassa deadlock, but it was to no avail as Petacchi's team kept the pressure on until the finish, with Petacchi taking yet another victory.
Tomorrow's 206.5 km second stage starts in Alcañiz and finishes in Sabiñánigo (Huesca), and includes the Cat. 2 climb of Monrepos with 30 km to go.
