Mercy Celebrity Classic - NEFort Smith, Arkansas, USA, September 25-26, 2004Moninger dominantScott Moninger was the man to beat this weekend at the Mercy Celebrity Classic. In Saturday's race, Scott initiated a break with hometown favorite Brice Jones and Jelly Belly's Alex Candelario. With Scott driving the break the trio quickly built up an advantage. There were many attempts from the field to bring them back but nothing would stick. John Liewsyn was eventually able to get away and when he got close enough to the three they waited for him. With John on, HealthNet then went to work with what looked like a green train with the Jelly Belly red caboose of Alex Candelario. HealthNet was clearly setting up Brice for the homer win, but had to wait for him as he was starting to come off the break right at the end. At the finish Jones was able to hang on and out sprint Candelario for the win. In Sunday's race Moninger was simply untouchable. On the short and fast 1k Van Buren course, Scott drove a break of 8 riders that lapped the field early on. Then Scott went and lapped the field again by himself. It looked as if he wanted, he could have lapped the field again but he stayed back just enough to allow for the others to have a field sprint. Alex Candelario was really the only other non-HealthNet factor in either race. He was able to out sprint Brice Jones for second place to take second overall. In Friday's Cavanal Hill Climb challenge, Scott Moninger bested the record for the 5-mile (8k) course by almost a minute, 22.32 minutes. In the women's race Magan Long, sportsbook.com, and Kelly Benjamin, ADB Cycling, traded first and second places out-sprinting each other alternately in each race. Team Basis was able to put a rider into the final selections each day, Chrissy Ruiter in the Fort Smith race and Nicole Freedman in the Van Buren race, but neither able to out sprint Magan or Kelly. Our thoughts go out to Barry Haley, Johnson Plumbing, who had a terrible crash during the Cat. 3,4 race on Saturday. On the straight away to the start/finish line Barry came off the course and collided with a pole. He sustained serious injuries to his face, jaw, chest, and back. Barry owns a bike shop in Fayetteville, Arkansas and has long been a fixture on the state and local racing scene.
