70th Giro del Lazio - 1.HCItaly, September 18, 20042003 Results Results Past winners Another big one for FlechaA month after winning the Championship of Zurich, one day specialist Juan Antonio Flecha (Fassa Bortolo) has added another big triumph to his palmares. The Spaniard with Argentinean roots won a 22 rider group sprint ahead of Gilberto Simoni (Saeco) and Jan Ullrich (T-Mobile). The group had escaped on the third climb of the day with 55 km to go, and remained intact until the finish. "I'm beginning to get a taste of winning in a sprint," joked Flecha after the finish. "We had four Fassas in the 22 and we were first looking at reducing the selection, as Ferretti had told us to do when we started the finishing circuits. But then we saw the tight cohesion of our breakaway companions, so we decided to bet everything on a sprint. Ferretti asked me how I felt about doing the sprint and I answered him yes. My teammates did an exceptional job in the finale because there were so many attempts to attack. In the last kilometre, Bertagnolli attacked and I followed him. With 500m to go, I turned and saw Savoldelli jump. I managed to get behind him and I jumped with about 150m to go. "After the Tour de France I found the condition that I was looking for for some time and in the Championship of Zurich, part of the World Cup, and the Giro del Lazio, I won the right prize after a year of hard work. And then yesterday I turned 27, and even though it's a little delayed, I have received a gift." How it unfolded176 riders started the race shortly after midday, with Niklas Axelsson (Barloworld) the only non-starter. The opening hour was typically Italian and slow, with just 30.2 km covered. The attacks started in the second hour, but everything was neutralised with the riders covering 40.6 km. The first mountain sprint at Palestrina was taken by Nick Nuyens (Quick.Step) ahead of Juan Antonio Flecha (Fassa), Leonardo Giordani (De Nardi), Gianni Faresin (Gerolsteiner) and Marco Fertonani (Phonak). On the descent (km 107), Marco Serpellini (Gerolsteiner) attacked and immediately gained ground, reaching a 1'53 lead in just eight kilometres. Serpellini was still alone as he crested the day's second GPM at Rocca Priora (km 124) with 1'06 ahead of Przemyslaw Niemec (Miche) and 2'12 ahead of Emanuele Sella (Panaria) and the peloton. Niemec was caught by the peloton on the Campi di Annibale (km 140), with Serpellini surviving to the top with a 25 second lead over Gilberto Simoni (Saeco), then Dario Frigo (Fassa), Leonardo Bertagnolli (Saeco) and Luca Mazzanti (Panaria) and 17 others. Serpellini was caught and a lead group of 22 formed with Basso (CSC), Nocentini (Acqua e Sapone), Noè (Alessio), Sella, Mazzanti (Panaria), Giordani (De Nardi), Giunti, Kolobnev, Simeoni (Domina Vacanze), Bruseghin, Flecha, Frigo, Petito (Fassa), Faresin, Serpellini (Gerolsteiner), Barbero (Lampre), Fertonani (Phonak), Bertagnolli, Simoni (Saeco), Missaglia (Lampre), Savoldelli and Ullrich (T-Mobile). On the finishing circuit in Nettuno, the attacks were started individually by Giordani, Frigo and Sella. Each time they were caught. The first time across the line it was Simoni and Kolobnev with a 0'05 advantage over the rest of the group, which was led by the four Fassa Bortolo riders. On the second lap, the group stayed together and had built up a 2'48 advantage over the main peloton. Fassa, having the numbers, kept it together for the third and final lap, hoping to lead out Flecha for the sprint. The only disruption came when Savoldelli attacked with 500m to go, but was caught with 200m out by Flecha, who held off Simoni and Ullrich to win the 70th Giro del Lazio. Marco Serpellini took out the climber's trophy. PhotographyImages by Fotoreporter Sirotti
