Cyclefest - NEFlorida, USA, October 1-3, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Stage 3 - October 3: Sunday SizzlerFinals rounds to Long & Artacho; Carney takes omniumBy Raphael Clemente The toughest battle of the weekend was heralded as riders lined up in the afternoon sun for the Cyclefest Sunday Sizzler. With a solid lead and strong teammates, Carney knew that he virtually had a lock on the omnium classification. It would be up to Colavita and Dominguez to take control of the race if they wished to change that. Seeing an opportunity and capitalizing on the game of cat and mouse being played by the top two riders, an early break formed after a flurry of attacks. Juan Haedo, Brice Jones, Oscar Pineda, Alex Candelario, Stefano Barberi, Raphael Clemente, Josvany Falcon, Victor Ayala and Scott Zwizanski quickly organized themselves and opened a sizeable gap on the field. With all the major teams represented in the breakaway, the lead increased to nearly 30 seconds in just a few laps. Realizing that the breakaway would likely succeed, Haedo (Colavita) stopped working in hopes that his team leader, Ivan Dominguez, could still somehow pull off a win and steal the overall from Carney. Not wanting to give Haedo a free ride to the line, Jones and Candelario soon decided to reduce their efforts at driving the break. This gave the chasing field just enough of an opportunity to close down the gap, but not before a spirited Barberi (JC Investors) jumped away from the failing breakaway in a brief attempt to continue his escape. A series of attacks and counter-attacks continued thought the race until a two-rider break emerged, with Gustavo Artacho (Colavita) and Eneas Freyre (America's Cycling Team) working smoothly together. Behind the leading duo the field had splintered under the pressure of constant attacks and windy conditions on the front straight. Florida native and pro mountain biker Derek Wilkerson was driving a six-strong chase group that included Jansen and Haedo, with the tattered remnants of the field not far behind. With five laps to go, Dominguez hit the front driving like a locomotive despite the fact that he had two teammates up the road. Though he did serious damage to the already decimated field, it appeared his efforts hurt him most as he dropped to the back of the bunch with one to go. In the end Artacho was the strongest of the two leaders, driving hard into the wind in the final laps and then coming from the back to take the victory in style. Behind them the gallop for the minor placing went to Haedo, with Jansen and Wilkerson rounding out the top five. Carney came across the line in tenth place to easily wrap up the omnium win. Dominguez rolled in at the very back of the bunch in 47th place, dropping him from second overall to fourth. Jansen's consistency throughout the weekend enabled him to jump up to second place, just ahead of another Florida native, David McCook of McGuire Pro Cycling Team.
